Have a look at Roger Gifkins' dovetail jig when you're down there, Paul. Not sure what you're planning to do but it's supposed to be ideal for small work, like boxes and drawer sides. You use it on the router table but I don't think it will take timber any thicker than 13mm/ 1/2"?

I've got to go down on the Friday, I'm afraid. If I do go. :(

Right. I've had a look at the weather this morning, taken in all the flood warnings from the past 24 hours and, looking on the news, traffic doesn't look good either. So... I'm not gonna make it to Yandles until tomorrow!

Is anyone still heading down today? I guess that, if you're local, it's not so much of a problem.

Paul, I'll send you a PM.

The weather turned out to be much nicer than expected - although, I still managed to get absolutely soaked walking back to my car in the early afternoon!!

I got to witness Paul's lack of self control first-hand when he splashed out a few hundred pounds a couple of nice bits of kit :D  How are you getting on with the Tormek? Good to finally meet you, by the way. :)

Didn't come away with too much myself. I bought a couple of odd lengths of iroko and sapele to repair a garden bench, a couple of different sanding sealers and waxes to try and, some turning blanks I may or may not use... I think they were Goncalo Alves and Olive?

Oh, and one of those brilliant Bessey utility knives.

Neither of us saw anyone branding their UKW badges though?
(...No, I wasn't wearing mine, either! )

If you think the self control was bad when you saw me......

.....as I walked back to the car remembered I needed some lining velvet for the jewellery box, so walked back into the main hall to pick some up. Unfortunately for me the velvet (£4 a roll) was opposite the clifton planes stand. Ten minutes later I walk out of the hall with the planned for velvet roll along with an un-planned for Clifton Number 5

Now I just need to work out how to build a shooting board

Well, I don't know what to say... You've made an excellent choice, good to see you went for something Brithsh too!

My tutor bought one in for us to play with at college before Christmas. I must admit, I almost walked off with it myself!

I'm surprised you didn't go back in for a Veritas plane as well - ...you know, with the prices going up and all! :D

being british was one of the reasons I was happy to buy it :) Am now hunting through the forum looking for shooting board instructions

also looking for hinge suppliers, just looked at brusso, can't believe how expensive they are

I think you'll be pleased with that Cliffie. I'm considering the No.5 myself

I went along to Yandles today and was wearing my badge 8) Met up with 9 Fingers for the first time (he was wearing his badge as well). Also had a chat with Aldel.

Had a go with Philly's new little plane which has the sole curved side-to-side as well as front-to-back. What a cracker. I wouldn't have believed the performance if I hadn't tried it for myself. Super job, Phil 8)

Had a chat with Mike Hudson from Clifton and came away with a lovely 3110 shoulder/bull nose/chisel plane. Another real cracker.

Had a nice chat with Alex on the Classic Hand Tools stand.

Martin Brown and Clive Day of BriMarc were sporting very natty new aprons

Came away from their stand with, what for me, was the star of the show but more of that in another thread in a few days time........

All in all, a good day, despite the lousy weather.

Cheers

Just back from Yandles (via another function/overnight stay).
Good to meet a few forum folk.
Had a good chat with Philly who had now given up the day job for making planes etc I hope the sales remain good of his quality products.
Bumped into Paul Chapman but before his spending spree.

Had a quick chat with Ratwood and Mrs RW. There was a rumour that OPJ was lurking but I did not see him.

I got a lot of out of Alans Machinery master classes. He has a very natural style and is not continually forcing his brand on the audience (nothing against Record power machinery). I was going to say hello Alan, but the Bandsaw demo came to a rapid halt when the rain caused a river to flow through the marquee and the power was cut off on safety grounds!

I was impressed by the dust collection scheme that leigh now have on their new DT jigs (it is back compatible with the older models like my D4).
I might buy one but I expect I'll make one one day as I'm a metal worker first and wood butcher second.
My D4 is on loan to a mate for the last year or so and when I get it back I decide then.

So a good day out and nice to put some faces to names. Cheers guys.

I was there, although I wasn't wearing my UKW badge... Who started the rumour? I did make eye-contact with Philly, it looked like he may have recognised me...? Phil, I'm sorry I didn't come to say hello (...again!). I was working my way around (get all the turning out of the way first ) but you were talking to some other people when I made it round. :(

On the subject of dust extraction, I learned from this show that even the Kreg Pocket Screw systems are designed with this in mind.

It was busy, I just didn't think it was as-busy as I remember the Spring show, also on a Saturday? Maybe the weather warnings put people off? I was still able to (just about!) creep around the timber stores. :D

Well I did not start the rumour but I confess to spreading it a bit!

Shame I did not spot you Olly!

Maybe next time eh?

Hi all,

I too had a good day out but felt visitor numbers were a little down compared to other times.
I only bought some Abranet sanding gauze to try out and a little pot of polyurethane glue. Wanted a fancy coping saw frame as seen on David Barron's stand and didn't realise that Classic hand tools sold them until I got home. Ah well!

Philly has an increasing range of planes now that he has gone full time and his stand had a steady stream of visitors
You really must check the quality of his work.
He was worn out after Friday as he kept having to move his bench because the rain was so heavy that the roof leaked!

Philly has a little competition from David Baron. He is primarily a furniture producer who also makes planes in the Krenov style. Expensive but very pretty planes. What really interested me on his stand was his version of a dovetail guide. Made from hardwood, magnets and PTFE tape it worked well.

More pictures can be seen http://www.aldel.co.uk/Yandles08.htm

I did meet 9Fingers who fortunately now has 10 fingers again!!
Sorry I did not sport any badges at all this time so may have missed some other forum members.

Cheers,aldel

Hi Aldel - so sorry to leave you out of my earlier post. I am terrible with names. (onset of senility??) I certainly remember meeting you.

Please accept my apologies - all ten one for each finger!!

Bob, were you stood by the Liegh dovetail jig when a very handsome welsh bloke started asking lots of questions about it ?

Paul, If I said yes to your question then I'd be agreeing to the handsome bit!

But yes I was inadvertently aiding the Brimarc demonstrator by extolling the virtues of the leigh DT system. I thought at least he might have offered me a discount on the dust collection system

SO Paul, did you buy a leigh?

Unless you are a member of the hand cut DT brigade then I reckon you would be hard pushed to find a better/more versatile jig.

No I don't work for leigh!!

I'll take that as a yes anyway :D

Bought the Leigh Super 18 jig with vacuum kit, waiting for it to be delivered now (can't wait, building a jewellery box I want to build with it). Then went to the next stall and bought a Kormek, then bought a Clifton plane, so my intentions of 'just looking round' all went to pot

Are you going to have trouble get that lot past management once the credit card statement comes in??

I hope you enjoy the new toys!

Bob
