Hello all,

Will be trying to upload pics for first time here so fingers crossed!!

Having finally sorted out my new apartment I'm hoping to get back to some woodwork , but now that I need to make a new kitchen and coffee table is my garden shed workshop big enough, no it aint. Below, hopefully, is the garden shed in my parents back garden which serves as my workshop

I hope that has worked , in case it hasn't I'll keep this post fairly short.

The two things I need from a new workshop are:

a) To maximise the limited space
b) To maximise sound insulation , as neighbours are close

Considering that I can come no further than flush with the front of the brick shed to the left I have moved away from a brick build as I feel that the walls would eat into the space too much, also I've never laid a course of bricks in my life.
Then I thought of extending the concrete base under the garden shed out to the front of the stone shed and then placing a stud wall structure on that base.
But after some forum searching I feel I'd be better off raising the stones under the wooden shed a little with some cement a la the Great Carlsberg circa 2005, to be level with some other stones on the higher stone shed base . Maybe this pic will make this more clear - so much for keeping it short......

Or maybe I could just buy one, but so far anything within my budget has looked really poorly made or meant losing too much precious space, Any Irish forum users who could advise on where to get custom built, quality cheap sheds??

Now I had better stop and check if the pics worked , any and all advice much appreciated as always, Paulc

Hello Paul.
My brother built his own shed/workshop using 8'x4' x3/4" shuttering ply.
He got a good deal buying all the boards and timber at once.
Used 2"x2" for the frame work, and shiplap to finish.
It's a lot stronger than the sheds he was looking at,and worked out cheaper, doing it himself.I'm going round tomorrow i will take a piccy or 2 if he don't mind,if you'd like.

I built my own workshop Paul. If you look at my Avatar on the left you will see it. I used 2x4 CLS for the framework and shiplap for the cladding. It may not be cheaper to build your own with small sheds but will turn out far stronger than those bought from the shops. Mine is on the large side at 24' x 13' and I saved a lot of money doing it myself so I gained. It would have cost over twice as much to buy one like this. Hope this helps.

Cheers Paul J that'd be great.

Mailee, I've seen your workshop on the forum, its a beauty, mine will be more in the order of 11.5ft x9ft and with limitations in experience and space I don't think it'll end up quite so pretty. I passed a skip yesterday which contained a number of boards which I thought might do for the framework. Here is a pic of them and of the markings on them:

What do you think could they be used for studding / framework for the floor and walls?

It would be great to save cash , and recycle , only defects are some screw holes.

Cheers , paulc

Paul.
Here are 2 piccys of my brothers sheds/workshop he built himself.
The shed on the right is an overflow from the shed his workshop on the left, plus all the garden equipment and the kids bikes etc.

His workshop was 12'x8',but as you can see he built an extension on the back to take the dust extractor and other bits and bobs.
Hope these give you some ideas.

I would use tanalised timber for the floor joists if you go down this route.

Paulc, take a look at the recent workshop builds which will tell you the various sizes of timber, and methods of construction we have used. Remember its ok to recycle but don't skimp on anything it will come back and bite you.

Hi Paul

This my extension to my workshop but it's about the same size as your talking about, all the framework was free from a building site it's all so wasteful as they were throwing it away...

And as stated by others ten times stronger than anything you buy ready made...

Cheers Paul J, not too dissimilar to what I'm planning at the minute but then the plans will probably change, am definitely going for tanalised timber for floor

Gary M , I'm in Dublin
