Tom - I Understand what you are saying now. Worktop space isn't an issue in my shop. I currently have the workbench, the 9ft wide bench at the back end of the shop and even a desk that was intended for the Mrs' potting - she rarely uses it, so I'll probably use it as an assembly table. I will be continuing with woodworking to a degree, but on a smaller scale, I've sold the bandsaw, but will probably keep everything else and just add a few small essentials - it did cross my mind to give up completely, but I've resolved to finish the workshop first and the assess my desire to carry on or quit.

What about storing finishing products? I was considering finding a metal lockable wall cabinet - to protect from spillages and fire hazards and such like..

Ed, how many hours a day do you spend polishing and dusting as opposed to making sawdust / shavings?

Well my productivity rate isn't too bad. In my defence this was done for a magazine article, so the level of cleanliness was elevated for that purpose.

Mind you, I do love the shiny things......

Cheers, Ed

Byron,

How about this for a plan...

Stick a few racks of adjustable shelving on the wall and see how it goes. Then you can spend some time using it and see what you need to change.

French cleats are great because they allow you to move things around.

You will never get a workshop layout right first time. Just let it evolve and see how your working practices pan out and that way you will be able to see where your tools need to be.

Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not having a go but you seem to over analyse. it's just a workshop so play around in it and enjoy it!

One more thought.. if you are going to finish the workshop and then decide whether you are going to carry on or with then maybe you have things the wrong way round. You've made some really nice things so just let the making dictate the workshop.

Cheers
Mike

I have the same chest as these but the cleanliness or lack of it would make you all laugh. I'll take a pic tomorrow.

Colin - I deliberatly keep finishing simple so all my stuff fits neatly into one of those plastic lab type trays about 400x300mm and it just sits on a shelf. In it is a tin of Osmo, bottle of meths, wire wool, tins of wax, some finishing oil and screw top jars for polishing rubbers...oh, and a couple of dusters - Rob

Ed's one.

My one

And I tjhought it was pretty clean

All the result of it being directly below the extractor so it gets dumped on whenever I empty it.

Wood storage is basic but fine.

This is the lockable cupboard I keep my finishes in.

Obviously I much prefer all the home made stuff but it was all expensive to make. I recon I spent about 5 or 600 on materials for all the cabinets including the router table and all the runners and castors. It may actually be a bit more still.

Dom, take heart ..
either Ed is "THE" tidiest woodworker ever, or he`s just blatantly a Tool Collector

Dear me, I go out to site for the morning and I'm being accused of being a collector while I'm gone... :-({|=

Lets just say I am a tidy person with a modest tool selection :D . If a scale of 'collectorship' were compiled amongst our members, I doubt if I'd even feature in the top 50.

Cheers, Ed

I reckon there's the dimmest glimmering of an interesting 'collectors' plane thread here Ed, to determine who's the uber UKW plane collector. How could it be organised though? It could be done on the basis of quantity, quality (a difficult one to judge) a combination of both? Maybe a week for all to contribute before the final winner is announced?
One thing for certain...Mike G will be nowhere in the rankings  - Rob

Heres my storage. all the shelving at the rear is on adjustable shelf pins.
DSC04911.jpg

I made up some cupboards to store stuff neatly, I intend to put doors on but I havn't had chance to yet.

DSC04917.jpg

Heres my router table and some more storage. Up the stairs leads to my timber store which is some shelves above the stairs.
DSC04915.jpg

Heres my bench, it took me 11/2 days to build which I was well chuffed with.

DSC04921.jpg

This is my tool chest. It was copied from a design in fine woodworking and is pocket hole screws and is very basic. The chisel holders are a bit naff but it was quick to make. I will be improving it.

The cupboards and drawers in this compound mitre saw table are my main storage, the drawers are all 30" depth. and hold all my hand power tools, welder, and all sorts of other stuff, since this pic was taken I moved the whole lot on to the wall to the right. It is now under my wood storage as in this pic.

When I've finished my new tool cabinet I'll have a clean up  and take some more pics of how it is now.

Chaps, thanks for posting all this pictures of your setups, it's given me plenty of direction on how to tackle my requirements, much appreciated!

Those air-cleaner extractor thingyamebobs, are they worth having? Do they get a lot of fine dust out of the air?
