Hi,

I am helping a friend to re-cover the w/s roof and need a bit of help.
The roof is felted at the moment but has 3 or 4 large lumps of wood on the roof.

I have seen felt being held down with batons before, but these are around 4x4 (ish) . Can I remove them and take it back to a flat (it is sloped) roof?

Any ideas as to why they have been put on?

Sorry if this is a bit unclear, I can try to do a drawing if it helps.

Thanks.

Hi RPM, (Sorry I don't know your name)

The first thing I'd do is check inside workshop where hopefully you can see the roof structure just to confirm that the supports for the sheathing are all in place. If the inside has been sheathed then nail or screw positions will show you where the roof frames are.

I suspect you will find that all the frames are intact and the sheathing is secure. The 4x4s are most likely odd bits of timber (from pallets?) that have been put up by a DIYer to hold the felt. They may not even be nailed or screwed down onto the roof, but have stuck them selfs down into the tar over the hot summer. Take care removing them, so you don't damage the plywood sheathing underneath.

When i felt a w/s roof i use tile battens (treated) and space them out to be over a timber rafter and nail them on, also fitted at the ends where any facia boards can also be fixed if you use good felt the wind wont harm it
