I have been meaning to sort out some sort of alarm system for my workshop for ages and kept putting it off but I really must do something about it soon

I have been looking at camera and video storage products but i am a bit confused -

What I think I want is a movement detector alarm (with audible alarm) for my workshop that will wirelessly start a camera and recording in the main house?

Has anyone done something similar? what do you do ? Help!

thanks

Mike

I think I'd be tempted to set up something discreet whereby a motion detector kicks off a CD connected to small speakers near each of the doors and windows playing back the sound of a large dog sniffling and growling lowly just behind the door/window. Perhaps that occasional sound of it knocking it's bowl about too. If the detector picks up movement a few minutes later - it barks!

Or you could set it to switch the lights on and start up one of the machines

bloody good idea too LOL but i bet you havnt done it :D

if you have then can you let me have the details and a copy of the dog cd please :D :D

If you do a dog CD you really need to have a dog as well as thieves will spot signs of a real dog, or lack of, when they case the joint.

Random person noises and radio along with some shadow movement across windows will be more convincing though not if there is a locked padlock on the outside of the only door.

Something like this fake TV light might also help.

If you do a CD try to have lots of random sound tracks so that the same sounds are not heard each time. Maybe an MP3 player set to random play on start up would help. If you have a long drive leading to the workshop then have a sensor at the end of the drive to get the FX started well in advance of someone getting close to the workshop. A further sensor nearer the workshop could start up a security light and a moving shadow inside a window to give the effect of someone looking out.

If you have a WIFI network at home, you could use a wireless IP camera such as a Panasonic BLC-131 which can be left on and will detect any movement and either start recording video or send images direct to any email address. You can also remotely view it over the internet and check on your workshop when you are away. I have one in our nursery so the family can check in on their granddaughter.

This is what I'm going to do with mine at home.

There is a piece of s/w that I can't remember the name of at the moment but I will dig it out, that means you leave a PC on with the camera running all the time, but the software senses a change in pixel movement on the screen and starts the recording then.

This has the benefit of meaning that the only files created on the PC actually contain movement so you don't need to search through hours of nothing to see if anything has happened.

Machine mart sold a plug in unit by Brennenstuhl that you can run anything up to 3680w, I bought 2 when they had them in a sale to discontinue them, has a light sensor and PIR so it turns on a dusk or whatever light setting you choose.

I went on holiday and set it up to radio 1 on full blast (its usually on 2 but early hours the music is quite civilised!), opened up when i got back and had a shock as i'd forgotten i'd set it, the applications this could be put into are endless with the power rating.

Oh and just checked, none on Ebay.

Crimecatcher or Evocam
Hmm, wasn't one of those, I'm sure it had Win in the name, but i'll see if I can find it.

Will check those 2 out though, cheers.

To be fair there are loads available, they're just quite good ones.

Mike

I think you need to decide exactly what you want your gizmo to do.

Do you want it to act as a deterrent or do you want it to show details 'after the event' ?

If the former then jfc on the other forum has kitted his workshop out with an ear-shattering siren that makes the ears bleed ..well, not quite..but loud enough to make the scrotes go somewhere else.

Truth is I'd like both :)

I want them to give up any idea of nicking my stuff but I'd also like to keep an eye on who is eying the place up.

I can buy an alarm from amazon which has very good reviews for £14.99 :D

and ditto a camera and solid state recorder - its just getting them all to work together thats the problem :?

thanks

Mike

That's the point, Mike, you don't need to. The Amazon alarm has its' own motion sensor, I'm guessing, which kicks in the audible alarm.

A camera will/should have the necessary software which constantly monitors the picture and only starts recording when there is a change.

So you'll have the best of both worlds as they are autonomous.
