As all of my woodworking equipment is in the garage it is covered under the house contents insurance (Hiscox, good value, excellent customer service so far). When we were looking for insurance when we moved we could only find two companies that had the "if it's yours, it's insured" attitude: Hiscox and Nationwide Building Society.

All my stuff is covered under the household contents policy (Zurich) - Rob

I've got Zurich and I read the policy again just this week to check the situation when we move in a few weeks time - found out that garage contents are only insured up to £2000.

I was intending to keep them going when we move, but I need decent cover. Not much I can do about it now, but I want to get it sorted in the new place.

Is this a separate extension to your policy, Rob,?

No it's not, it's on the normal household policy, I'll check it again tonight, but I seem to recollect that mine was for more than £2000 - Rob

It's shocking how the numbers add up if you list it all down and put replacement values against it all

SWMBO made me do it last year for insurance purposes and I thought it was a good idea also that she had a list of items and values in the event (hopefully unlikely!) that I pop my clogs any time soon, which was quite likely for a while after she saw the totals on the list

I have horrible visions of her paying some Arthur Daley type a hundred quid to clear the workshop and take it all away, or sticking it all on ebay for a pittance because she doesn't know what it's all worth

Cheers, Paul :D

It was forum buddies I had in mind when I wrote that Paul, I know what you lot are like !!!

Mine is covered by the household contents policy new for old cover I was old this year Insurance Company the Pru

the important thing is you are not using it for business use hobby only

I use Tesco, the policy reads that everything I own is covered including outbuildings and their contents. After recently making an inventory and being shocked at what it all added upto I rang them to confirm it was all covered. Oh yes says the girl on the phone "all covered". Putting the phone down I still wasn't convinced, it all seemed a little off hand and easy and I wasn't convinced they where properly listening. So I rang back and asked again, this time much more interest, lots of questions and referrals to supervisors and underwriters. Turns out I really am covered, had to increase the amount of cover as I had worked on the basis that I would be unlikely to lose both the house and workshop in a fire of suchlike so set a value on that basis they made me up the cover to cover everything, about another £70 a year and they have also confirmed in writing that I am covered.

Following on from this discussion in the "general" section we followed a couple of suggestions from the hive mind and looked at/took a policy out with M&S. Any single item to £5,000, don't have to list - can be in house, garage, shed, with kids at Uni etc. Again hobby use only.

did you get anything in writing?

I dont trust insurance companies

I have the policy and Like Richard S I asked lots of questions also I am highly unlikely to lose everything as the workshop house and garages are all detached from each other .
so yes I am satisfied I am covered
