thanks chaps. it's enjoyable and a hobby so see it as a time sink away from realities of everyday. I'm questioning the hand tool approach as power tools would be a lot quicker but there's a meditative element for me in taking the time to learn this stuff.

got the second inset done today ✔️

I wanted a dog in the bench vise as well so I can hold different widths of flat stock more securely than in the tail vise
I wasn't sure how I could incorporate a pop up mechanism until I saw pedulla guy making his super bench so got these kitchen door pop out things. A bit of maths and that and they work really well.

Now I can put another couple pop up veritas dogs opposite in the bench top, in am inset like the others.

Once this is done the bench will pretty much be complete! Although need to sort out the under bench shelf 🤔

I've also added some sapele trim about the place to make it look nicer and it's had three coats of osmo satin (cloth applied) over one coat of osmo raw.

I had to remove my vice after about 15 years to clean / regrease etc. Pig to refit holding it from underneath...
I can't quite guess how easy / hard yours would be to remove / refit?
<grin/> I hope you don't mind it getting a few dings - looks good enough to eat off!

I can take it all apart excepting the one peice L shaped back plate which forms part of the laminations between the tops lab and the front apron.

I didn't need the additional space and means I can hold things dead level to the workbench top if needed

Here it is a few months on

Main things I would change
- inset hardwood sections ( for the bench dogs) would be a continuous strip
-Moxon type vice instead of the 52 1/2

love the veritas inset vice!

Its a very nice looking bench. On moxons while they are great to have I would not replace the front vice with one. A portable one to sit on the bench top is a better way to go. I find the bit I like best is that it raises the work to a very comfortable height where you dont have to bend over. The older you get the more you like that feature. A moxon is a good compliment to a bench but I for one dont see it as the main vice.
Regards
John

Just caught your bench build, don’t know how I didn’t see it, really like the way you haven’t really been swayed by other builds and have gone out on your own, particularly with that end toolbox, neat.
