Started a third secret compartment jewellery box yesterday for another daughter and was thinking of doing another work in progress thread. Just as well I didn't.
Cut my mitre corners for the box and glued up last night, when I went for a look this morning you could put a table knife into sojme of the corners, of the outside mitres.

So the third box is hving design changes

An now I have found that the lid will need corners.

I think the problem is that I have been off woodwork for 4 months and concentration is needed for this hobby.

Tut ! I never cut a bad mitre...... honest
Box is looking good :D

Thanks,
I have now put some corner pieces to the lid as well.

The box is oak offcuts.
The corner mouldings are some sapele from my old window frames.

It's now a case of designing/constructing on the hoof. :)

DW,

Was there no option in making the corners as an inlay :?:

so in that option the outside size doesn't chance

The box is only 9mm thick and I could see daylight through a corner

I did mean to put some supports across the corners but the lady distracted me  told me it was coffee time or something.

Was it a glue-up problem, as in the pieces moved in the clamps, or in cutting/shooting the mitres? Not being critical, just hoping to learn from someone else's mistakes.

And a new design idea has emerged, I have lots of veneers given me by a member and the next box will mean I can fix veneers between the corner posts, ( I have never liked the idea of veneers meeting at corner edges) In fact the moulding might have a small rebate to accommodate the veneers.
Must finish this box and start the next one.

I assume that you cut the joints in the normal way and then shot them in on a board. This does present difficulties as there are long distances to clean up. The job can be made easier by using the disc sander. In the pics below the mitres were cut roughly to 45 deg and then the disc sander was very accurately set up to sand in the mitres. When glued, the joints were reinforced with some walnut, the slots being cut on a jig running in the slot in the table saw (Post earlier about this)

This is an astrolabe from hols in portugal last year. Timber is cherry, finished with french polish and wax - Rob

Woodblike thanks for the tip.

Pleased to say my trouble is now out of the woods.

The pictures below firstly show how I cut out the secret compartment .(shewn on an earlier thread for this type of box) I screwed the compartment down with screws and used my mortice router jig and cut the long sides of the aperature out with a 1/4" bit. The othertwo sides were removed with a fret saw and cleaned up with chisels.

The next picture shows the open box compartments made for earings.
The compartments were cut out with a M42 type bandsaw blade which only needed light sanding on the rough cut sides.

The final picture show the box completed but awaiting a finish as is usually the case for me!
