Hi all

Can anyone recommend a decent wood store / supplier in my area. I live by junction 11 of the M25 in North Surrey. Would be willing to travel into SW London as well as Surrey and surrounding areas.

I'm after some oak for some shelving at the moment but looking to the future for other projects. Just want somewhere with a good selection of hardwoods, helpful knowledgable staff etc.

If only I lived near John Boddy's or Yandles......

Thanks

SL Hardwoods looks good but it's too far really.

I have looked at Waterhead37's map. I seem to be in bit of no mans land. The London suppliers are too far into london. There are then suppliers west and south of Surrey, which again is well over an hour away from me as I'm in North Surrey. There are none on the map in Surrey! (some would say Croydon is Surrey but to me that's Greater London)

There must be somewhere decent in Surrey or the close surrounds.

Hoping for some replies from fellow Surrey woodies to divulge their secret suppliers!!!

What about West & Sons? Superb service - highly recommended (by me). They have a smalluser/enthusiast dept specifically for hobbyists, are extremely helpful, open on Saturdays and are just all round lovely people to do business with.

Is J11 the one near Kingston? In which case you are about 45 minutes drive from SL Hardwoods. It isn't quite in another galaxy!
They will provide you with the service you require - not to say that others won't, but SL are good in my experience.

Guys

Thank you all for your responses.

I have put both SL Hardwoods and West and Son in route finder. Both take an hour pretty much exactly. I was hoping there would be somewhere closer as both will end up being half day round trips. These 2 do look very good places however and I will be checking both out.

Thanks again

Mark

To find a good supplier I pretty much have to travel that sort of distance.

If you are going to make the trip to SLH, give them a ring first to see if they have what you need, they only keep a small anount of prepared boards in stock and not a lot of sawn, shame if you had to make a second trip to collect  I usually phone in what I want then pick it up when they get it in (I don't buy what they have stored as there outside storage is a bit poor)

I'm a couple of miles withing J6 of M25 and it still takes me 20-25mins to get there, over an hour if its rush hour.

There are a lot of guys on the forum who would consider a decent hardwood supplier within an hours drive away extremely local!

There are probably no more than 50 or so good hardwood specialists in the entire country.

Cheers

I would recommend West & Sons - they have enormous stocks and are very helpful.

I just bought some 25 x 150 sawn American White Oak from them, they let me sort it from a huge stickered pile. I had phoned ahead to make an appointment (not essential, but helps if you want to sort through the stocks in their trade storage areas)

Their shop also has all sorts of precut timber to tempt you - its an Aladins cave!

I would also think the car journey from North Surrey to Petworth compared to Croydon is much more pleasant - just thinking about the traffic in Croydon makes me feel ill!

The bit through Croydon isn't too bad - up Wellesley Road, turn off and along a bit. It's ok if you avoid rush hours and the Purley Way.

The problem is parking as the yard is in a residential street and very small.

One over in Hampshire, but might be a bit far - [email protected] Excellent selection of locally grown air-dried oak. Some other timbers. Great prices - worth the petrol!

If you don't mind a run round the M25 to Tonbridge - Timberline. I was there a couple weeks ago and they were overstocked, so it's really hard to see what's in, but you can spend as long as you like poking around.
