If you want cheap carrots, go to an equine feed specialist. They sell large sacks of them dirt cheap for feeding to horses. Carrots are carrots are carrots.

I know a vegetable producer who had a shipment of tomatoes returned as they did not look good enough. Shortly after he had some of the supermarkets buyers visiting and they decided to work through lunch. The secretary made them some cheese and tomato sandwiches. The buyers all said why don't you sell us tomatoes that taste like these. The producer said they are the ones you rejected.

The demands for uniformity, size, and low price mean that quick growing is the order of the day and that generally precludes any taste. I believe food is too cheap and we waste far too much of it.

Lidl's I believe must vary from one place to another - I purposely go to Lidl as their fruit and vegetables are invariably cheaper and better than than the other supermarkets, Asda in particular.

Our lidl is pretty good for fruit and veg, prices certainly good and we find they keep ok, every now and again get some that don't ripen or rot a bit quick but it's nothing like as bad as some are making out, vast majority is great, esp the veg.
