My first thought was polystyrene, might try it at the weekend if I can find some.

I got a few balls of it in a craft shop ( for sanding balls - -another suggestion from the great people on this site ! )

hobbycraft sell them and you can use spray adhesive to attach the velvet (just make sure that the propelant/solvent in the adhesive doesnt melt the polystirene)

it is however difficult to attach velvet (or any material) smoothly to a dome so you might be better off the a cylinder cut in half (then a circle cut out of that)

That looks absolutely brilliant.
Between the two of you, and no doubt the 3rd Muskateer ( John B ), you have produced a superb, unique and in my mind, priceless memento, that , - good fortune willing,- you'll be looking back at in 40+ years,
with the fondest of memories.

More power to you all...

as the phrase goes.. " That Rocks a Fat one "

absolutely first class

Well done Wizer,
You have put the finishing touches to a special piece, that as Jenx says you'll hopefully look back on in years to come with fond memories.
Congratulations to all concerned in it's production,

Malc :D

Looks very good. If I might make a small suggestion.... a 'lucky' silver threepence or sixpence set into the lid would look really good..... British coins minted before 1920 are sterling silver, so an early silver 3d would add a nice touch. Not expensive on ebay.

As a matter if interest, coins minted between 1920 and 1946 inc. are 50% silver. I've just made a desk blotter for my wife's director, with a 1946 sixpence set into the knob - (birth year) - not presented yet, but admired by all. (Ever tried to buy a desk blotter? It's hard to buy decent blotting paper these days)

Thanks Nick. I was thinking along those lines. It's a shame I can't get something to mark 2009. I could use a £2 coin but they are a bit on the big side. I guess I could get a brass disc made with an engraving.
