Wireless printers

Anyone have any recommendations on wireless printers?

SWMBO wants one as she's too lazy :wink: to walk into the study and plug in her laptop, so does anybody on here have one they like and is reliable? MiL bought a black HP one (can't recall the model) and has had it replaced twice due to 2 different issues.

We have an old LaserJet 4000 that is connected to the router in the study. No need for wireless on the printer itself.

Yeah, and if i still used my old vigor i'd do the same but i'm on a silly BeBox now so no USB printer port, and my 2 existing printers aren't ethernet

I have a NAS drive for backup that has a built in print server USB port but it is ethernet of course and wired to the router. You could buy a wireless print server for around £60 if you want to use your existing printer(s). saw a netgear one on ebuyer with good reviews. No experience of it myself though.

I will be very interested in any replies here, as i just replace my old comp when the clan bought me a nice new laptop for my sixtieth birthday present with the old comp all was connect now i have to get up and cross to the other end of the room and plug in to print any thing my printer is a lexmark 5400 which i believe there is a box you connect to it and it becomes wireless .hc

You can buy wireless print servers (if someone has not already said that). Not used one myself but toyed with the idea for all the same reasons.

I have the Epson PX700w which is wireless. Have to say easy to set up and cracking pics. Online i can get full set of compatible cartridges for around £9.99. cheers

yes the only other way would be to have a PC connected and turned on permanently that can act as a print server.

No, the printer doesn't have to be network ready - that's the point of a print server. It connects to your network (by wire or wireless) and your printer(s) are plugged into it by either the parallel port or the USB port. I've used the wired versions in the past to connect old printers with only parallel ports to my Mac network (Macs don't use parallel printer connections.)

I have an HP Photosmart C6100 that I'm happy with.

It is wireless but also has a network and a usb socket. I use it connected to my (wireless) router with a network cable but I've also sometimes connected it to the router wirelessly.

The printer puts out a series of web pages which let you configure it remotely, or you can use it's front panel - it's pretty easy to use either.

The wireless router has a DHCP server which sets up the printer but I've also done this manually in the past.

I don't recall using a direct wireless connection to print without the router but I guess it's possible to do it - there are ah-hoc settings on it's web-page.

It's also possible to connect using Bluetooth, but I never have.

The printer also lets you scan and copy and has a separate paper tray for holding 6x4 (I think) photo paper. I've only printed photos a couple of time but have been pretty impressed with the results.


I don't use it often and I discovered that the rather expensive ink cartridges have a built in use by date and they can refuse to work even when they have ink left in them. I've got round this problem by using a 3rd party ink solution that uses it's own cartridges that you can inject ink into.

I have had the same problem with cartridges drying up, very frustrating, I have an HP inkjet and I have thrown away colour cartridges that were a least half full. :evil:

HP printers usually have the print heads mounted in the ink cartridge. This is why they are expensive compared to, say, epson.
I have got some good results, when faced with no ink coming from a cartridge, by gently wiping the print head with some mild cleaner. Often this has been no stronger than water.

I messed up my Epson Photo R300 with a cheapo replacement cartridge. Haven't managed to clean it up to make it print properly. Ended up getting a HP 1600 colour laser at a PC World sale for less then the price of a replacement cartridge.
