Winged box

Hello all not had a chance to do any turning since the 8th of september :shock: but today I did 8) 8) 8)

Don't know what its made of,its from some offcuts given to me, it smells a bit like candle wax when you turn it?
Anyway its textured,coloured with acrylics and the finial is held on with a small brass screw to try and make it strong enough for its inevitable use as a handle for removing the top :lol:

Looks like old iron, Not sure if thats the intention, but looks good. Its looks like its very heavy, and quite old

You used a screw ? - you mean you havn't threaded the finial and its recess ? :wink:

Hi Johnny,
This is a new variation on a theme of decorated pieces Johnny and i do like the old corroded iron look on the finial. You could almost be fooled into believing it was a finial dragged out of the sea.
All in all a really good piece and I like it very much.

Pete, not sure what part of the finish you're asking about, texture,colour,or last bit?
OB, the texture is just done with a dremel with a round burr in it.

I think you have achieved the effect you wanted,but i think the wings could've been a little thinner,and the finial does look out of proportion to me :?:

If it was not for the contrasting band of wood I would envision it as just having been retrieved from an offshore east indies wreck. Very crisply done.

Regards Paul comment re proportion, I might be wrong but I think the finial should ( in my eyes - and my eyes have been somewhat lead by what i have read, not learned from experience ! ) be half the height of the box, giving thirds, - your does look to equal the height of the box itself.

However i'm sure this "law" lol is flexible, and should be broken to suit !

Its hard to get any idea of size, proportion, finish, texture though from a picture though.

I anycase what you have posted is fab, and you should be very proud.

To be honest Johnny i don't know. :?
I kept looking at this piece,and as lovely as it is i must add,something just didn't look right to me,and i believe it is the finial.
As you know finials have got to look spot on i think else it does spoil a piece i think.
Whether it's because it's got two beads near the same size,it might look better if the bottom one was a lot bigger and flatter than it is now,so it tapers more from the bottom up :?:
Also i think the pointy bit could do with been thinner,and perhaps not so long.
These are just my thoughts Johnny,and i'm no expert so i wouldn't take any notice

Loz and Paul, the rule of thirds isn't always applicable and should maybe be considered the 'guidline of thirds'. My understanding of the rule is that these proportions are percieved by the human mind as looking 'natural' and are not just for the vertical aspect of objects but the horizontal aswell(not to mention positional aswell as proportional). I don't think you should look at anything and have this magical rule to measure up foremost in your mind. I'm not suggesting my box is great and you are wrong or anything, rather just that because something dosen't follow a set of rules its not necessarilary wrong. I try to make things that look 'right' to my eye rather than 'right' to a set of rules(although the two are obviously often the same)

I think this piece is excellent in every way.

In terms of proportion I feel it's spot on to my eyes. Feels just right to me.

Your choice of finial design works very well, kinda like the blade of an ancient pike.

The texturing effect has worked really well, nice to see a piece that is a break from the norm.

This is just my own personal view of the piece,and have said how i feel about it.
I have never worked to any third rules or any other rule in my turning,perhaps i should, so that doesn't even come into my thoughts of it.It is simply just how i see it,and is my critique of the piece,which you asked for.

Wasn't trying to moan or anything PJ,I do ask for and value your(and everyones) critique and appreciate you taking the time to look properly and give your genuine thoughts on any given piece(and it shows in your words when giving your critique that you do take a good look and think about it,probably more than most), whether they be favorable towards it or not. My last post was meant in a conversational way, just giving my thoughts on proportion and particularlary the much touted rule of thirds.
