I think you will find that this is Robin Wood from Derbyshire http://www.robin-wood.co.uk/
He does some wonderful bowls on his pole lathe.
Hie did a demo at our club last year(2008) I have never seen so much wood flying off of an axe

I'm with you Richard....
The lathe can keep suckin' up those watts as long as it likes !
That 'pole nonsense' looks far too much like hard work

( impressive though, isn't it. ! 8) 8) )

Did Robin ever take part in THE TOUR DE FRANCE under the name of Lance Armstrong? Fantastic to think that that was the most up to date lathe of it's day years ago ,and can still turn out top class work in the right hands or feet? REgards Boysie

If you've seen those old photos of the bodgers with the stacks of chair legs in the woods, they could really rip stuff out with their pole lathes. I love they way they worked with nature harvesting the wood fon an 8 year cyle and using everything, even the twigs. The pole guys have our respect but doubt bthat you could earn a living on turning alone using this method. I'm off to my electic lathe now.

Soulfly,I would be happy to be able to turn anything at the moment .It's a bit frustrating not to be able to enjoy my hobby but in a few months things will be different. But if I had to do it without electricty I would have to throw in the towel.
Where I live there is a hugh intrest in Vintage machinery, from Cars to Farm machinery mostly. From Easter to October most weekends within a 100mls.radius will have something going on. Every time I go to one there will be some (New) things to see . All have great pride in their Pieces. A bit like woodturners I suppose. Long may it last. REgards Boysie

Robin is a full time turner and manages to earn a living from it. Also he told me off for calling him a bodger. Apparently the term only applies to a certain part of the coubntry.
