Folks,

I am in the market for a set of butt chisels.

The two contenders I have found are the crown set and the set by Pfeil.

Any thoughts / experience of the above or are there others to consider?

Thanks

Simon

I'd go for the AI's personally (If I didn't have a set of vintage socket chisels  )

Don't let the moaners get to you Tom its an opportunity to buy more stuff.

Are the butt chisels for a specialist purpose?

Essentially any Japanese bench chisel, even the cheap ones, will wipe the floor with all Western butt chisels. I have used very basic Iyorois for about 10 years. Better edges and edge holding. Hit them as hard as you like.

Hi,

I have a set of Crown paring chisels 1/2" cranked, left and right skew and a butt, quite nice a little to polished (rounded corners) but the butt is a nice controllable little chisel very handy. They some times come up on Ebay as a set ot induvidually, there are a few on at the moment http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trks ... Categories

If you have LN's...

...why do you need butt chisels? :p
...and if you look carefully on the underside of that cabinet, you can see where I've filled in a biscuit slot that was in the wrong place , good job it t'wern't a domino...would have gone right through - Rob

Do the handles on the LN's come out easily or is there a trick to making them stick in there but easily remove them when needed? I've got it in mind to have three sets of handles, the mid-length ones being the main used and the others for certain applications, as/if needed.

I've seen a lot of that since I bought my Greenlees, on eBay. Lots of socket chisels with the top of the socket rounded over from being bashed

Heh. I can imagine someone finding a chisels with such a short handle in years to come and marvelling how the handle was worn down with use quicker than the blade.
