Hi ALL

Right my axminster band saw arrived to day ,new to me, it's 240 v has a blue 16 amp three pinned round plug on it.

So do i place an extra 16amp mcb breaker in the consumer unit and run a blue cable with a 16 amp socket for the band saw . or

Do I cut off the 16 amp plug replace with a 13 amp plug plug it into existing 13 amp ring main and then up grade the the mcb breaker to 16 amp :?: any leccies out there .hc

If you use a 13 amp plug then upgrading the mcb to 16 amp won't help as the fuse in the plug is still 13 amp.

Also the 13 amp ring would have a 32 amp mcb anyway.

What is the rating on the motor? That would have more bearing on how it needs to be connected.

I agree with Waka - run a dedicated 16A radial from its own MCB in the CU. Tis the only sensible way of doing it.

hi guys

when i was working, i have left plenty of round pin blue sockets (wall mounted )and plugs, plus i still have tucked away a portable extension real of the blue cable as well just gathering dust (is it OK to use these) :?: if so what size MCB breaker is required :?: , i have an spare Crabtree B16 61/B16 MCB is that big enough :?: or does it need to be bigger :?: . hc

I'd try this and see how it goes. My table saw has a dedicated 16A supply and I found a type 'B' mcb kept tripping on startup due to the transient initial current surge. I changed it to a type 'C' (which is designed for this type of equipment) and have never had a problem.

Don't want to contradict anyone but mine runs absolutely perfectly on a standard 13a plug on the house ring. I have no extra circuitry specifically for this.

Chop it, stick a plug on and see how you go, you can always stick the commando back on if need be...

I agree with Night Train - it's the motor rating that's important. The saw would not have been fitted with a 16 amp plug so that you could cut it off and fit a lower-rated one. My Jet 20" throat band-saw runs on a dedicated 16 amp circuit that I also plug my table-saw into and I've never had a problem with it.

Remember that this is a seconds machine (IIRC), so may have been fitted by first owner.

that is a very good point .

On the updated newer model Axminster plus AP4300 3/1 it does say that model requires a 16 amp supply. so is this a standard power requirement or has this model now been upgraded ?.

anyway which ever way , if i install a 16 amp wire with plug and socket does it normally follow that the mcb is 16 amp or is this required to be a higher rated one than 16 amp. hc

I did consider it myself TBH but when it arrived I plugged it in and it worked fine, even with 2 other machines running simultaneously (even though there's only me so that should never happen), so I just went with it
