I meant daft in the sense that you mentioned Simon, they have got to be one of the most un-appreciated breeds that we have have.

Roy.

Agreed, and you are right about the mud as well. Are there any other breeds that need a bath every day?

Here he is, looking rather clean.

Beautiful dog, you've got your hands full though Simon, they do calm down as they age though, I promise!

Roy.

which OS do you use?

Confused: - Office suite or others Spaniels?? Sorry - lost the thread a bit.

What thread was that?
Dogs I understand, computers? I've tried being nice to 'em. swearing at 'em, read Noddy's Guide to Computers from cover to cover, then took the dog for a walk!

Roy.

Back OT. Mandriva, except that the latest offering stalls my browser so it's back to XP until I edit some lines. I hope.

Just shove a few bickeys down the CD-ROM drive and pour it some water and watch it go.

For me it's Linux at home mostly, though use OpenBSD as a firewall/"server" machine. I'm tempted to get a Soekris net5501 to replace the PC that it's currently running on - those boards support OpenBSD and consume 20watts or thereabouts, so I could leave it running 24/7 without feeling guilty.

I also play with Solaris occasionally, had an Ultra 60 for a bit but eventually sold it off. Now looking at the x86 versions out of curiosity more than anything else.

Cheers

wow so we really use unix systems far more than I expected.

I had a bit of a play with parallels on a mates intel imac and must say I'm very impressed.
My tiny G4 mini is getting a bit old now but with a gig of ram and a whole chain of firewire drives it does very nicely sitting under the plasma as a media centre, infact neither me nor the wife tend to use the pc anymore.

won't ever buy a copy of windoz again.

in linux i always keep a copy of vmware handy, just in case.

on the mac I've got virtual pc if I REALLY have to.
The xp machine hardly gets a look in these days, must summon up the courage to wipe it and stick the latest fedora on it.

oh and a fedora box in the loft for backups and mass storeage.

at work its Solaris sun stations (with pci card pcs) all the way, we have one thats been up for 3 years and counting.

the dog hates computers, rather play with an old sock toy, infact I'd rather play with him and an old sock toy..................

More great Linux Spaniel pictures. I'm definitely getting one just deciding when to turn virtual plugins into biscuit chomping, fell running reality

Depends on computer at the time, but I use these:
Vista business (most often as it is on my laptop)
XP pro
Win 98 SE
QNX (real-time operating system)
DOS
MAC OSX

Linux Ubuntu (desktop), XP Pro (desktop), XP (laptop). Have been using Ubuntu for about 6 months and very pleased. I understand it's the friendly version of Linux otherwise I wouldn't be able to use it!!!

*TECH SUPPORT:
Program: WIFE 1.0

Dear Tech Support:

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 and noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space and valuable resources.

In addition, Wife 1.0 installs itself into all other programs and launches during system initialization, where it monitors all other system activity.

Applications such as PokerNight 10.3, Drunken Boys Night 2.5 and Monday Night football 5.0 no longer run, crashing the system whenever selected.

I cannot seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run some of my other favorite applications. I am thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0, but un-install does not work on this program.

Can you help me, please? Otherwise, I'm in a spot.

help me out Thanks, Joe

Dear Joe:

This is a very common problem men complain about but is mostly due to a primary misconception. Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0 to Wife 1.0 with the idea that Wife 1.0 is merely a "UTILITIES & ENTERTAINMENT" program.

Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and designed by its creator to run everything.

It is unlikely you would be able to purge Wife 1.0 and still convert back to Girlfriend 7.0. Hidden operating files within your system would cause Girlfriend 7.0 to emulate Wife 1.0 so nothing is gained.

It is impossible to un-install, delete, or purge the program files from the system once installed. You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0 because Wife 1.0 is not designed to do this. Some have tried to install Girlfriend 8.0 or Wife 2.0 but end up with more problems than the original system.

I recommend you keep Wife 1.0 and just deal with the situation. Having Wife 1.0 installed myself, I might also suggest you read the entire section regarding General Partnership Faults (GPFs). You must assume all responsibility for faults and problems that might occur, regardless of their cause. The best course of action will be to enter the command C:\APOLOGIZE. The system will run smoothly as long as you take the blame for all the GPFs.

Wife 1.0 is a great program, but very high maintenance. Consider buying additional software to improve the performance of Wife 1.0. I recommend Flowers 2.1, Flowers 2.2, Big Flowers 2.3 and Chocolates 5.0.

Do not, under any circumstances, install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3. This is not a supported application for Wife 1.0 and is likely to cause irreversible damage to the operating system.

Best of luck, Tech Support

XP for client compatibility, XP & Vista virtual machines under OS X with Fusion, Ubuntu and Debian for Offsite and office servers, OS X for office and general use.

Could someone explain to me the advantages of Ubuntu?

How is it possible for it to be free? How do they make their money. I hope it is not advertising.

Is it possible to run programs such as Photoshop on Ubuntu. If I changed over would my current software be useless?

I only ask because I hate Vista!

Ubuntu is free, like most other Linux distros, because it relies on a network of community volunteers to eek out the code and resolve the bugs through the GNU licencing system - or *Nix compatible software developed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The philosophy behind GNU is to produce software that is non-proprietary.. However, the driving force behind Ubuntu is its billionaire South African philanthropist who has resolved to offer professional resources to this community.

I run the equivalent of Photoshop from the GNU community called the GIMP and again is totally free, although you can run Photoshop through Windows emulators such as Wine or VMWare.

Advantages of Ubuntu are that being open source it is not "owned" by anyone and you are not locked into a proprietary system. (Note I use the word owned loosely).
Being open source it is free.
Being linux it is stable (for the most part).
Being open source it is easy to develop for and there is a large development community to assist.

Companies developing Sopen Source software usually intend to monetise support services and will offer custom development as a paid service.

While some Windows software may run on Ubuntu / linux with emulation (ie Wine) some (a lot IMHO) does not. As far as I recall Photoshop does not run well under Wine emulation. Having said that there are Open SOurce alternatives. You could use the Gimp instead of Photoshop for eg, Which while it has a learning curve, is no harder to get to grips with than Photoshop. There is also a Gimp addon which makes it look at feel like Photoshop to ease transition. This is an example of the sort of development and freedom to develop available in relation to a Linux based platform & Open Source software.

As a rule I would not rely on being able to use existing Windows software, though a bit of google based research will tell you whether others have succeeded in running any given application on Ubuntu with Emulation.

Hope that helps some.

Cheers Mike
