I am looking for a s/h scroll saw, as opposed to buying a new £100-£130 Chinese special….
A Delta saw local to me for £60 or a Hegner for £100, but a 120 mile round trip to collect…..
Pictures below…….
Which, assuming they are both working fine, would be the better buy….

Cheers

If the Delta was complete, I would have said, buy the Delta but the top clamp is not the Quickset clamp, it's a make do solution. I've used my Delta for 30 years, so I'd consider it to being a premium brand. Though I'd have to admit that I don't know what criteria is used when deciding what defines what is a premium brand.

Either is a decent deal. Hegner have an incredible reputation but it's one of those that is perhaps a little pedestal-like, by which I mean they get trotted out as the example of top quality and that risks becoming an assumption that they are unequalled. It similar to Rolex with watches - top quality, yes, but at a premium price and there are alternatives of equal quality and probably better value.

I can't claim first hand experience of the Deltas, but they have a loyal following. @loftyhermes is the resident Delta expert here and hopefully he can advise on the example you have found.

Spares for a Hegner are renowned for being overpriced but those for a Delta are likely to prove unobtainium here in the UK.

Which to choose? As I opened with either is a decent deal and I wouldn't be distracted by the distance to the Hegner, it's the kind of thing you forget about after you have the machine. I would look into if the Hegner is single or variable speed since I can't make it out from the photo. If it's variable I'd go for that, absolute bargain.

If not and I wanted a saw now I'd opt for the Delta since it is at least two speed, but if not in a hurry I'd be tempted to wait. The used scroll saw market isn't particularly liquid, and if you wait a while the right machine will turn up at the right price in the right location.

I have a Hegner and am pleased with it. You mention the Hegner you’ve seen is £100. If it were me, I would be wondering why only £100?

Blister posts most bargain hegners available on other sites, I got my bargain hegner off fb marketplace for £60 and q 10 minute drive away thanks #Blister
