The BT Home Hub could do with being upgraded but I'm thinking of trying another provider, any thoughts? We've been on BT from the start so don't have any experience of others :?

I avoid the cheap as chips vendors. I also check out blagger.com to see how many gripes there are from customers. Much of what one hears though seems to be apocryphal.

We're with Zen. Tech support is very good and located in the UK. Good support for Macs as well. Our package has an upper cap on download bytes but easy enough to buy some more Gb. But that is our choice of package. Not the cheapest though. But i reckon you get what you pay for.

Hear good stories about PlusNet as well.

Consider deals that include your telephone line and calls good savings to be made as bb. line rent and calls all cheaper . I am with Plusnet no problems and support VOiP as pay as you go so second line for low outlay if required.

We have been with O2 for about a year, faster speeds than some other providers (unbundled ASDL 2+) and very cheap if you have an O2 mobile (this includes Pay as you go or a corporate O2 phone). But haven't had to call support (yet).

Plusnet also seem OK ... we opted for them for my mother-in-law. Very cheap if you are in 'popular' areas (ones with lots of vendor choice); moderate cost otherwise. Again, no problems so far.

first think what you need from a bb provider. If you're competant and rarely if ever use tech support then why pay extra for good support.
you need to consider download - peak and off peak. why pay for peak download if you never online at that time.
other thing to consider is if you can go through an LLU provider.
also, what kit do they provide - some really do give out cr4p routers.

I'm with Sky and although their tech support is diabolical, I've only had to use it once in 2yrs. The service itself is fine. No restrictions and no notable problems. I intend to move away from them purely because my BT line is incapable of receiving more than 5gb. The good thing about Sky is that if you have their satellite service, you can bundle in the phone line and broadband and get a deal that's hard to beat, IMO.

I generally agree that with companies like Zen and Nildram, you get a better quality of service throughout, but they are just too expensive for my budget.

hiya calpol, i have the bt home hub with bt. ave quarter bill for phone and b/brand £175-£190. not happy. so i went to 02 shop £15 for router then 6 months free b/band. then £7.50 a month there after. i asked bt for mac code and when i told him why his manager got on and said he can give me 5 months free b/band and £7.30 a month there after. so i have stayed with bt.  i think it's a good deal'

Another happy switcher away from BT here. Had been with BT Option 3 "Unlimited" BB forever, but kept getting emails over summer warning us we were close to the 'fair use' limit of 100Gb/month; if we exceeded that we'd be capped to a 2Mbit connection for 30 days! Interesting business model - offer unlimited internet access then penalise people for using it....

Fast-forward through a series of pointless calls to customer services, and we happily switched to Sky in November last year. Utterly painless switchover, slightly faster broadband over the same wires and the ability to watch different Sky channels over broadband on four additional devices (PCs, Xbox etc...) all for slightly less than we were paying BT just for broadband. Oh, and free phone calls too...

HTH, Pete

O2 are doing homephone/broadband package from march £60ish all in :p
Their broadband service to me for the last 16 months has been 100%.
I used the help line twice,uk staff and the person used the remote desktop
to sort the problem.

Does that mean O2 loads their own software onto your PC? Scary.

At least they are upfront (although you have to dig for it) and they do admit that there is limited tech support for Macs and Linux.

Pity they aren't as upfront when it comes to pushing the iPhone. Nowhere on their website do they suggest that it might be a good idea to check coverage where you live before you went and bought one!

...... 100Gb/month......
  I don't even use that in a year!

Lol, yes, surprised me a bit, but with two teenagers in the house who live their lives online - especially over school hols - software updates, movie rentals, music downloads, online games, Skype, iPlayer, and so on - it all adds up. Fact is though, as far as BT is concerned, 'Unlimited' isn't unlimited, even when sold as such at a premium.

Cheers, Pete
