Where to sell lots of gear

Hi there,

I'm retiring and wondering if anyone can help me decided where to sell a lot of gear from a cabinet making business. There's loads of stuff—no big machines left but a lot of hand tools, tooling, power tools, clamps, finishes and so on.

There's too much to realistically ebay or put up here and post out—it would become a full time job for weeks! Which makes me think of physical auctions. Can anyone suggest any real-world auctions which handle woodworking gear and would give some kind of worthwhile return? Or any other ways of profitably disposing of it?

Advertise a “garage sale” on here and open up your doors... saves on commission and you’re more likely to get rid of the little bits that probably won’t sell at auction (unless they’re bundled up as larger lots).

The best specialist auction house for tools is David Stanley. Auctions are held in Leicestershire and simultaneously online. There is also Tony Murland, operating in East Anglia.

Nearer to you and worth a phone call to see if you have the sort of thing they want to buy is G and M Tools of Ashington, W Sussex.

There used to be a second hand tool shop in Bosham on the main high street.

If not still there he might still be trading somewhere in the local area. Worth a google or two.

Was at the Surrey Hills wood fair and there was a tool seller there from Kent. Will try and find the name for you - probably worth him driving down to view your stuff.

Old English Tools - found it but it's Faversham, quite far to come. He was is Cranleigh (near Dorking) so he doesn't mind driving around the South East.

There's also the Second Hand Tool Shop in Wallington. He might be willing to come down and give you a price. Neither are that close but they might be passing near you on their travels in the next week or two. Worth a phone call.

I know they're only shops but the guys running them have lists of people who are waiting for certain tools to pop up and they will happily give you a job lot price for all your stuff and take it all away to stock up their shelves for months.

This is the bit I think you'll struggle with. People buying at auctions (just as in most venues :-" but perhaps even more so because of the auction premium) want the stuff for as little as they can get away with paying, resulting in entire boxes of e.g. planes, gauges, C-clamps, hand drill, braces or what have you selling for about what you'd want one or maybe two to sell for. It seems like only rare or exotic stuff actually goes for decent money.

Best way to get maximum profit is by starting a load of internet rumours under various aliases,
stating Mr Sellers recommends this and he said in a recent blog that they're getting as rare as hens teeth.
Hurry up though....
When they're gone, they're gone!

Thanks everyone, some helpful suggestions here. Bosham tool shop is long gone unfortunately! I will probably end up sending most of it to auction, the really good stuff will do individually...

I thought the Bosham one - shame that it's gone. Was Leasside tools any use? I see they have a tool museum as well!! Might pop down to Arundel Castle and 'accidentally' stumble across the place!!
