Hello peeps,
As per title could anyone point me in the right direction for sourcing a wide maple board? Preferably a reputable online retailer - I've not got the time to go searching in person, I do know it is the best policy really. Places like Yandles and Tyler hardwoods are at least an hour away - 2 hours round trip and that's before I lose myself in the shop and timber yard etc. 🤣 . As fun as it is, it basically writes off a whole day which I cant afford during the week due to work  and SWMBO doesn't then appreciate me wondering off for most of a day on the weekends. Additionally all the other timber yards I know in Wiltshire only stock native hardwood spices. I'd love to know if any members can recommend someone/somewhere close to Salisbury.
So while its not perfect I'm looking online.
I've found many online timber merchants with prices ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, and many more that don't show pricing at all. BUT I'm really struggling to find anywhere that has boards as wide as 225mm let alone at a reasonable price.
I know I could joint a board but I want one solid piece for the project - aesthetically I don't want the grain book matched I want it to flow in one piece.
So am I asking the impossible?
Is there anyone out there with a wide maple board I can buy or knows where I can get one....?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and respond.
K

PS remember sawdust is man glitter so lets sparkle the place up a bit :giggle:

Whitmore's Timber are likely to have what you are looking for. Not near Salisbury, but they do deliver. They also watch this forum and provide excellent service.

Here's a [Link] to their site.

[Edit] - I've just checked and they do list American Hard Rock Maple but I can't tell what widths.

Thank you! I will give them a shout.
Though I think I may be sorted.

Could I perhaps get a reality check? I've been quoted £70 for a rough sawn maple board at 250mm wide x 25mm thick and 3m long - I thought that sounded reasonable but open to being corrected...?

£100/cuft sounds reasonable to me, that assumes most of the timber in the board is useable. Also from a 25mm board you'll likely only get 3/4"/20mm finished thickness.

Long wide and thin boards often have cupping and twist to deal with (at least the air dried stuff from yards near me does) - what’s the longest component you’ll need as that can impact how much extra thickness you’ll need to factor in.

20mm finished is what I'm aiming for.

I'm only taking the 3m length as that is what they come as, and I'm keen to add maple to the stable of timbers I regularly use. I actually only need 1.2m for the current project and the longest component is 30cm. So I think I should be OK.
But I take the point and may email the supplier to ensure they pick a board with minimal bowing/cupping and shakes etc.

edited, was suggesting Tyler hardwoods then re-read the first post. They do have good maple though.

Cool, 300mm clear and 20mm thick should be very achievable - sometimes people unfamiliar with timber treat it as a homogenous product, which it isn’t. Hopefully no offence caused :D
