Where to find unique fixings and reliable screws etc

Hi all,

I tried searching the threads but the problem is that I don't know the correct terms to search.

I am looking for recommendations for where to get things like strong, reliable screws 'like they used to make', weird shaped brackets (or whatever they're called, like the photo I have attached), different types of hinge, etc.

I know I could just make brackets but I only have a precision saw or hacksaw to do it with so would be there forever.

I also would like information on decent wood types, i.e. pine today more closely resembles butter than it does the pine of 100 years ago. What wood do I use to patch an over-worn dowel hole so I can re-drill and dowel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try ironmongery direct as for screws like they used to be made is not so easy-try adding the word traditional to your searches. A company I’ve used a few times for steel table legs is vevor- they sell all sorts tbh so worth a try..

I have always used screws from Screwfix, must have got through thousands of these.

There are still some legacy stocks available of, for instance, GKN (Guest Keen Nettlefolds) slotted woodscrews. Google is your friend (allegedly).

That was the one I'd forgotten. I've had good brass screws from there.

If you want modern pozi stuff, look to Germany ...

Screwfix et al constitute the wild west - in that you'll never know what you're getting, quality-wise ...

Zinc coatings, yellow passivation etc, aren't worth a shyte. It's marketing hype. I mean that they'll corrode like anything especially where the threads are buried out of sight. Good steel will last longer, especially if you rub the screw in candle wax, or dip it in vaseline.
