My goodness Jacob what a mine of misinformation you are especially quoting your memories of 1999!
IOW - a great place to visit with lots of nice attractions including the Dinosaur Museum.
Bovington Tank Museum in Dorset has recently been given a face lift.

Some of the items were returned to the MOD, others sold off. If you remeber seeing it My Self propelled Bofors gun ( Morris C9/B) is in storage at another site waiting to see if it will reopen under new managment, along with other Island owned lumps.

Cowes is worth a wander through for a lunch and meander in front of the big Naval building where the yachts come in. Also if kids with you, there's some brilliant rocky shores at low tide for some serious rock pooling :) I found the pubs to be great when we camped there with the kids 2 years ago and some fabulous country/seascapes. Also there's always the delightful red squirrels. The yankies (greys) obviously couldn't swim :)

I think so - we went about five years ago. I've a vague memory of one perching up on top of an earth mound. Would that've been yours? I certainly remember the grins of the folks chasing around in the Bren gun carrier! I'll post a pic if I can dig them out - they ran a Centurion and a T34, IIRC (but my memory is BAD).

Good news if it does reopen.

Those from the Mainland who move here tell me there is more to do per square mile here then on the north Island.
I quite enjoy my Tax free Morris Minor, and my MOT and tax Free Bedford truck, so long live old bangers, you pay, I play.
Is it still the same with the old cars? I remember staggering back to the marina in East Cowes and thinking there must be a rally going on. Austin A40s, Cortinas etc. I even spotted a Bedford CA van just like my very first (1970).
I guess it's down to mild winters and no salt needed?

Not so many these days as the scrapage scheme culled quite a few, and the roads are now salted, and if that don't get you the pot holes will. Cars lasted longer here because we were too tight to buy new ones and they don't get stressed as they have only got a maximum drive of 25 miles before you fall in the water. I suspect if you saw a blue CA van in East Cowes that was my mate Ken's and thank god that things gone now.

Interesting fossil cliffs at Black Gang Chine.
Nice coastal walks, too.
A strange place, though. They still believe in dragons. And father Xmas.

If you have been to Blackgang you have seen the dragons. Of course we believe in Father Christmas he lives in Seaview with all the other celebs we take no notice of.

If you do plenty of driving about the island Mick, you'll know your way about like an native in a few days!
You might be able to get an all day ticket for the buses too!

There's stacks of good walks, if that's your bag.

Have a good holiday Mick.

John

I remember years ago visiting the island and seeing Blackgang chine. I also seem to remember there being some sort of fairground on the cliff side which apparently fell into the sea the following year! That was also my first and last trip on a hovercraft. :D

Ah nostalgia!

I just about remember seeing the SR.N1 scudding about in the Solent, on holiday in Seaview in 1964. A couple of years later, my dad took me for a ride across to Southsea in an SR.N6 - bloomin loud in the cabin (we sat right at the back).

Hovercraft - built on the Isle of Wight by Saunders Roe, who also, incidentally built British space rockets.

It's ironic the island has a reputation for being a time capsule!

I pop over there a couple of times a year, my parents have a holiday place there near to Freshwater. That side of the Island is a lot quieter than the east side, plenty of walking opportunities and great pubs. I always end up going to Robin Hill country park (got some interesting wood carvings there and supposedly Europes largest totem pole, quite impressive) and often have falconry shows etc.

Also Shanklin Chine is nice as well, very relaxing and lot of interesting plants. The botanical gardens at Ventnor are well worth visit and if you are round that way head down steep hill cove to the crab shack, they make the most amazing crab pasties. Its a steep walk, but worth the trip, right on the rocky seafront, perfect on a sunny day.

The waterfront restaurant and pub near tot land has recently been taken over and offers all kinds of Mediterranean food, its located right against the crashing sea and you get the best sunsets there of an evening, clear skye permitting.

If you have kids then Amazon world is always a winner, my son loves it, and blacking chine, although i haven't been there for a few years so not sure what state its in these days (last i heard it was all falling in the sea!)

Newport os great if you like Art and the like, but its also stuffed full of cheap tacky shops and a lot of Chavs! i tend to keep away from there if i can help it. Finally god shill has a model village and a good family pub, the griffin, n ice way to spend the afternoon, around Godshill i mean not necessarily in the pub all afternoon!

hope that helps a little.
