Having read that thread, I'd be inclined to wait. No idea what they'll be like, but they sound good.......

Cheers

I don't know, how good can it get?? I reckon you should go for one or two of the current LV offerings and if for some reason you are unhappy, then they seem to hold their value, you can get shot on eBay and 'upgrade'

Sorry to bring this thread up AGAIN, but have are you any closer to making a decision yet Ed? or have you made a purchase and not shared it with us?

(In fact I'm not sorry, I just like reading/chatting about handplanes and quality tools in general)

Cheers

No decision yet. I was hoping that the new Veritas planes would have been smoothers, but evidently not. Still mulling it over.

I'm also considering some machinery purchases at the moment and can't decide wether to do these now, or if I should splash the money on an uber-smoother and do the machinery upgrades later. As I was saying in another thread it feels somehow better to me to spend money on handtools as they last forever - electrical stuff always seems a bit transient to me.

I am also waiting to see what Phillys brass soled smoother looks like with a tote and an adjuster, though I'm not fully sure a wooden plane is for me.

Never thought I'd say this but I've got an annual bonus burning a hole in my pocket and too many options to choose from!

Cheers, Ed

If it were my annual bonus - not that us poor teachers get anything like that - I'd go for hand tools, because as you say, they seem more of a permanent addition to your arsenal.

Have you given more thought to making your own? Making a small smoother is quite straight forward, especially if you go down the screwing/riveting route a la Ron Bresse, and will only cost you around £20 - £30 max.

P.S. just out of interest, what do you do for a living?

I'm a Project Manager for a large construction company. Originally I graduated in Architecture but it wasn't for me so I followed the real money to the contracting side of things!

Cheers, Ed

I was shifted from engineering design work to project management (albeit for a small engineering company)when I worked "in the real world", and didn't like it one bit!!

I lasted about four months after the switch and jumped ship into teaching, which was the best move of my life. The wages for this part of the world aren't too bad, and I get thirteen weeks holiday a year   . The kids aren't too bad either, there isn't a day that goes by that I don't laugh (and/or scream!!)
