I thought we could do something similar to the 'What did you do in your workshop today ?' thread, only with workshop "Smart Moves" (Not so clever moves).

I'll start off with my "Smart Move".

I backed my car up to my garage door and proceded to move some wood I had just bought from the boot to the garage. I then went about routing a load of MDF (without dust collection) having forgotten that not only was the boot still open, but so was the garage door. So all that lovely MDF dust was blown directly into the car. :( ... lovely!

The smartest move I did today was stay away from the workshop :D Over the last couple of days I have made a drawer box 100mm too short, dropped my phone and cracked the screen and lost the keys to the toy landrover I'm selling and broke the chuck guard on a bench drill #-o

It wasn't today, but I jammed the window on my classic car and when trying to fix it I shut the door with the window seals removed. The glass isn't jammed anymore, it's in a million bits all over the workshop! I think the new glass should be here today though.

Fitted all 6 drawer fronts to my in-progress router cabinet (no separating structure, flush fit drawers. Cabinet back already attached). Then realised I hadn't fitted the pulls yet and they were all snug fits...

Made a cardboard template to fit a Charnley Forrest stone to a cavity.

Forgot to turn it over for use!

I was doing quite a large glueup and as I was worried that the Titebond Extend I was using would set before I finished, I decided not to glue both sides of the joints but only one. Applied all the glue and clamped only to see no squeeze out along one of the hugely important joints :(

.. I then realised one of the boards had been glued upside down.

.. Not only that, but I had also forgotten to cover my cauls in tape to stop them sticking.

.. I was pretty angry at this point and decided to come in for some dinner. I then managed to bite my tongue to the point of bleeding not once but twice (most annoying thing ever) whilst eating some pickled onions.

FFS!!

Finishing a 'demon's head potion bottle' [for my son's LARPing] after night shift and 23hrs awake, drilling a 22mm diameter deep hole to carry the bottle/tube, the forstner bit grabbed, I didn't [enough] and the carved lump spun round and round, bending the forstner bit, then flew off into my belly, bounced off  and into the wall then to the floor. #-o
Luckily no broken pointy bits, just bent bit and bruised belly.

Thanks Geoff, the belly will mend, stubbornly refuses to go, the carving was rushed and is little more than roughed out, it's the forstner bit I'm annoyed about.
Tiredness and machines should not be mixed.

I read this at lunchtime and thought it was tempting providence to post such a thread.....but things had gone well for the last couple of days so keep focused and it won't be you.
A simple dovetail box with absolutely spot on through dovetails - as in sell your soul spot on. Just needed to route some grooves for the bottom and yes, managed to route into the tails which would be visible. I'm a tails first man so recutting from pins isn't my thing.....
Be afraid, be very afraid as I'm blaming you. Without this thread I would have been fine.........

I really appreciate posts like this because it reminds me that it is not just me. I do my fair share of mistakes on a regular basis, but not today. Oh no, not today, because today I didn't go into the pigsty ( still haven't tidied up).

My smart move for today was putting the lid back on the BLO before I knocked it off the workbench....Phew.

Well I had a list of requests as usual from friends and family so I thought I would make a start with an nice 18" platter for the mother in law, I had a nice looking 3" Yew blank which has been drying for a couple of years.
So I popped this on a face plate and bolted it to the VB36, started nice and slow and trimmed it to round.
I took my Aircap off had a cuppa admired the emerging grain patterns, then returned to the lathe, popped on my headgear and started to increase the speed of the lathe when BANG!!
The whole blank shattered leaving just the faceplate on the lathe, a large chunk hit the bed bar, bounced and took out a wall socket, window (even though covered in steel mesh) and put a large dent in the work shop vac. Other chunks shot around the workshop knocking things awry.
Now luckily I always stand to the side when upping the speed, and I have decent head and face protection, but, had one of the larger chinks hit (it was a heavy bit of yew) I am sure I would at best had some decent bruising. I also have some heavy curtains to catch shavings around the lathe which caught many of the chunks before they hit expensive tools and accessories.
I gathered the bits together and found that hidden inside the blank was a long bark inclusion which hardly showed on the outside, this combined with the increased centrifugal force opened the blank in a very impressive manner.
Now in 20 plus years of turning, (touch wood!!) I have only has a couple of minor bumps and cuts, but this served as a timely reminder not to be complacent with safety gear (PPE) and safe practices in the workshop.
Oh and an excuse for a small nerve settler of single malt as I finished for the day........... :D

How do you turn a pozi drive screw head into a slotted head in an instant?
Simply run your TS75 with a brand new blade straight through it using the guide rail.
I am pleased to report the swarf collection is excellent and the motors extra torque really helped. It also removed all of the filler from the head of the screw.
The only indication was a horrible noise and some sparks.

Oh and cutting a load of MDF parts, then vacuuming the workshop going to change the powertool extractor bag and realising there was no bag in it to begin with. filter not happy, need another shop vacuum to vacuum the vacuum.
