Hi all

This question is for a friend of mine, he bought a Makita MS (non-sliding) and only used it a couple of times but he could never get a true 90 degree mitre when the 2 45's are cut using a square they are out say 2mm over about a foot, we tried allsorts to get it right moving the fence etc. to no avail so he popped the saw back to Axminster for them to try, he got served by a really nice chap who after trying to sort it came to the same conclusion that yes it was impossible to get a true 45 degree angle?

He said due to it being over 28 days old then he would have to send it back to Makita this he did, it has just come back and they said they can't find a fault? Anyway the chap has agreed to refund the money or if he wants to pay the extra then upgrade to a better saw and here's the problem he would upgrade if he knew what make/model to get so over to you if you have any ideas he would love to know he is willing to pay up to about £250, the only thing is he still wants a non-sliding model?

Thanks for any help in advance...

In my axminster cat. there is only the LS1040 260 mm mitre saw this has a good reputation £156 .
The LS1040 should do the job, the discrepancy you mention is less than one percent (2mm in 305mm) picture framing kit may be what he requires, they do a mitre trimmer for £100.Cut with saw and trim to fit.

Hi Lee, I removed the plastic inserts from both my mitre saws and replaced them with hardwood zero clearance ones, then I thicknessed 2 bits 0f timber to fit in the kerfs, when I make my cuts I don't rely on the detentes but use a square or 45 jig to align the table with the fence, works well for me and I only have cheapo saws from B/Q and Toolstation.

Regards,
Rich.

Thanks for the help lads, I must admit my Dewalt 708 does cut bang on and due to this we thought he's would/should!

a mitre trimmer may be the answer but defeats the object a bit in my opinion and likewise having to use a 45 jig but I will let him know...

Thanks again...

Another vote for the Makita LS1040, had one for a few years now and it's spot on. I was so pleased that when I needed an SCMS I bought another Makita ( LS0714 ) and that's another cracking bit of kit.

Just looked at a pic of the Makita LS1040 and it looks like the one he had the trouble with the chap at Axminster even said that it couldn't cut accurately with it maybe he just had a rouge one but he doesn't want the same problems again he is looking at a Bosch version at the mo' he found it at a store locally so the chap bought it outside cut a mitre and it was a mile out?

The Makita saw in question has an exellent reputation and having used one myself, I would say it is one of the best standard mitre saw's available. It sounds like he's been unlucky on this occasion and i'm certain that if he bought the same model again, it should be OK and cut spot on. I am somewhat dissapointed to here about Makita's response though, I thought they would have liked to get to the bottom of the problem.

Hi,
I have a Makita LS1040 which I would be prepared to part with for about £80. It is in perfect working order and while it is a few years old it has had hardly any use. I live in Shropshire and it would probably need collecting. Let me know if your interested.
