So I just rang up iwood.co.uk to ask what price for 13ft3 of prime grade oak, and explained that I have a self-build house to build and that there will be much more than that. He starts then saying he needs a cutting list to quote a ft3 price. I basically got tired and though to myself, that they obviously don't want my business and gave up trying to get a price. So cut a long story short, what are people paying at present (ft3) for 38mm thick prime grade sawn oak boards?

Thanks

It’s not unreasonable because the price will vary significantly based on length and or width.

It's a first for me. When I used to ring up Sydenhams at Maiden Bradley, they would simply give me a ft3 price over the phone. Just called another mill, and they were happy to quote 10ft3 price for 38mm and 25mm sawn boards and didn't ask for the width.

European Oak is one of those woods that some suppliers get quite "Prissy " about. On principle I won't deal with firms who can't offer a cubic foot price - based , of course on the amount you are buying.

When I had my workshop in Kent, there was a local supplier of oak, who categorised his wood into about 5 bands, according to appearance. This meant that you bought the rubbish at normal prices, and the pretty boards at inflated prices. This was fine if you had deep pockets and needed to order your wood like designer fabric.

One of the suppliers in the East-End was notorious for sorting through their timber stocks and pulling out all the good boards to sell at higher prices So if you ordered something like Maple in 4" and up, they were likely to have pulled out all the 10" and larger boards, but were still charging what their competitors were.

38mm is fleet for sawn Oak, I would expect to buy in @ 41mm.

You say prime grade, worth having a look at the spec French Oak suppliers (below) to understand as to whether that spec is what you need.

I will be honest, asking for a general price per ft3 from any one is purely speculative, you would be better served by giving them a cut list, for a factual price.

I've been pretty happy with these folks, and their prices seem competitive? 10cu at 41mm rough sawn QB1/A £48/cu

Try venables brothers specialised oak suppliers near market Drayton. Used to be in Stafford. Always easy to deal with and way cheaper than say hymor who take the Michael.
