African Blackwood.

To this:

What do you think,
Is it an improvement?

Sorry John, appreciate the work and finish involved with the new finial but to me it does not work on that box.
The upper blade just seems too dominant to my eyes.

I think the finial is great and really unusual but like Chas not on this box. Maybe on something bigger. Whatever you do don't chuck it as it is really effective, just needs a different bottom.

Stick with the first one JB ... that worked just fine.

Just an opinion of course... and as said, use the 'new' one somewhere else, cause there's nothing wrong with it.. just not on that box.

Ah, well back to the drawing board.

A good exercise in form though! :roll:
Hopefully I'll pick up a tip or two tomorrow at our turning club.

I really like that new finial, John - but as has already been said here, I also think it would look better on a larger item.

Personally, I wouldn't put a finial on that box at all :? ...but the finial, in a larger form, would look OK on a shelf, just by itself 8)

Interesting that someone else feels that no finial at all might be better! Personally, I find these tall thin elaborate finials spoil turned work, but, as has been amply demonstrated on the forum, tastes differ

Well John,i still can't make me mind up over this box and now am confused even more.See :?
I would just go along without having any finial on this box as the texturing on the top is enough,and i think the finial takes the eye away from this.So perhaps just a little round knob on top in the Blackwood.
