I've made some of these (WIP here if anyone's interested) for presents but a little unsure how to finish them:

This one is finished with 4 coats of finishing oil and buffed with some wax (which give or take a few coats of oil is my normal formula).
But because it'll most likely be near the kitchen sink it will get a lot of splashes. I finished one for my wife but in my ignorance used a lacquer finish which I've learnt the hard way is by no means waterproof (so how come the finish on my Oak Ikea kitchen units seem so resilient - that would most likely be lacquered?)
What do you recommend - guess varnish would be an obvious choice but not keen. Still welcome any suggestions though inc varieties of varnish I don't know about. Will an oil finish be ok?
Many thanks
Gidon

please please don't show my missus that... [-o<

(looks brill btw)

Thanks chaps - never used melamine (melamine lacquer right?) - will give it a try.
Wizer - my family all came down at Christmas and loved it - they all wanted one! Just shows sometimes the simplest things and all that!
Cheers
Gidon
