Did an test today re-shaping an older file to see how it went and it worked much better than expected. Obviously I lose an edge with this method but that isn't the end of the world.

Glad it works OK. Just for my info, did you use and off hand grinder or an ali oxide abrasive belt (or something else)?

Aluminium oxide on my belt grinder, chewed through it in no time and didn't blue the metal either, though I will be a lot more careful when I do the actual files.

OK, noted, thanks. Yup "blueing" can be a problem with ali oxide (but less than on an off-hand grinder I find). Glad you're sorted anyway.

I prefer ceramic belts generally but the coarsest I have on hand at the moment is 120grit so I opted for the 80grit Alox that was already on the machine and it seemed to work fine.
