Blimey Chas, who'd have thought that? I must admit, at school my parents always made sure I had a Staedtler propelling pencil, but these days I just buy a box of 50 wooden ones with a rubber on the end for £2.00 at staples and a cheap sharpener of course.
Regards, Rich.

I am reminded of my schooldays when in class i put up my hand and said.... ` Miss, i aint got no pencil`
`Now, Piggy` she replied, `it`s I have no pencil, We have no pencils, They have no pencils`
After a moments thought i asked
`who`s got all the bleedin pencils then ? `

BFP, when I was at school it went,
I haven't got a fencil,
there is no F in pencil, boy,
exactly, Miss,
Rich.

I lived in Lowca for a while mate, and i love the Lake District.

Thanks for posting that Chas - some of those mechanical pencils are really nice. My favourite is the A W Faber Castell TK 9600 that takes flat leads. I've had a couple since my school days in the 1960s. They are excellent for drawing thin straight lines when doing technical drawing and, when writing, you can use them like an italic nib in a fountain pen. You can still get the leads.

Cheers

Mrs Piggy and I had an amusing pressie this xmas, it`s a pencil sharpener in the form of a cat with it`s tail up. Guess where you shove the pencil ?
Correct, and when you do it meows !!!
Our 2 cats have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand they are intrigued with the new, rather small and stationary but vocal feline, judging by their expressions whenever it meows. And on the other hand there is a certain look of worry that it`s not only going to be a vet`s thermometer paying a visit up the back of beyond !!

Yes, but have they got one that doesn't disappear the second you put it down in a workshop???

Gary

Don't everyone just keep one behind their ear?

My only problem with pencils is that they all end up in my bedside drawer after Mrs T insists that I remove the one I've got behind my ear when we go to bed. If it was down to me I'd just leave it there!

Tesco cheapos for me - 50 for £1.00!

By the way, what's the point of those square 'carpenter's pencils'?

I ave often wondered if propelled pencils where any good in the workshop, i may invest...

Hi WiZer, dunno what your bins are like but I need glasses when I'm setting out and I have tried prop pencils and have found that the softer leads leave a good clear line but are always breaking, whereas the harder leads don't break but I have to look a lot closer to see the line.hth
Regards, Rich.

I had Trevor Bayliss (the bloke who invented the wind-up radio) to talk to some kids, and he told them the story of Percy Shaw and the invention of cats eyes. Apparently Percy used to cycle home from the pub a bit the worse for wear, and he used the light reflected in the cats' eyes to see the road. If he had been going the other way, Trevor said, he would have had to have invented the electric pencil sharpener.

Staff fell about laughing, kids sat wondering what the hell he was talking about...

When I was at work, our training people arranged for Trevor to come and give us a talk about motivational stuff. He's probably the most entertaining and inspirational person I've ever listened to - and how refreshing that he totally ignores all the PC stuff.

Cheers
