Mine is shown below, very simple just 40mm batons fixed vertically to the wall with timbers fixed horizontally to those leaving gaps for cantilever shelves to fit between.
At the base I added some drawers for small components, the shelves are made to accommodate my most used tools & are very simple to make.

Why does someone so well organized need 4 tape measures? If you could see my workshop you would know why I have 7 Stanley Knives (approx)

If you look carefully there are 5 tape measures  😉
I tend to have lots of tape measures (12+) & pencils as I’m forever going in the workshop to cut up timber etc for a job then after loading it in the van I’ll invariably leave with the pencil & tape I’ve just used in my pocket, after a day on site I inevitably forget to return said pencil and tape to the workshop when I get home.
They gradually build up in the front of the van until there are no more in the shop at which point I’ll fetch half a dozen & put them back on the shelf.

I have at least twenty tape measures... why is it I can never find one?!?!!!

Could you elaborate on the use of French Cleats here a little please? I'm not sure what you mean. Thanks.
I've been reading this thread with interest as I need to sort out some wall mounted tool storage.
Sorry, @JonCamo beat me to it by a few days.

Pinterest is generally a very useful source for french cleats ideas and possibilities.

What I meant with it being great for standardising and adjustable is that you can have a board with as many or few cleats, as long or as short as you want. And as long as you maintain the spacing between them with a template or piece of scrap, any of your hanging bits can hang on any of your walls!

You can even go as far as hanging your 'not frequently used' tools on a cleated shelf like bench grinders, sharpening station, glue shelf or fastener caddies and hang them in front of your workbench when you need them and then put them on a different shelf when you don't need them.

God, Doug, you have no idea how much better that confession - from a professional like yourself - makes me feel. I've trailed along behind you on Instagram and marveled at your organisation and the structured layout in your workspace. To find that you are as absent-minded and distracted as the rest of us, takes away a lot of self-flagellation and makes me feel better as I slowly rotate in my huckster workshop, saying; "I had it in my hand 30 seconds ago, I know I set it down, WHY can I not find it? I haven't moved my feet..."

...there is a certain diminishing length of pencil after which it is sure to appear in the washing machine...
I discovered a nifty trick a few months ago, once a couple of pencils get below usable length, say 70mm, square the ends, make a 1/2" cut lengthways, CA a thin strip of laminate in and join together, bit of sanding and voila, decent size double ended pencil (y)

And when you go to put it behind your ear, you poke your eye out with a pointed bit of lead.

a) I wear hearing aids, (left ear is dead) so no longer able to stick a pencil behind ear, and b) hand to eye co-ordination is just fine, so can't imagine being a problem, YMMV of course :ROFLMAO:

Yep, that's my worry, my hand coordinates to my eye 😉😉😉😉😉

I feel for you, I haven't moved so it must be somewhere within arms length, but no it has done a Harry Potter and disappeared. Happens to me all the time :)

Another application for the wee magnets? I took tuition from expert wood turner Darren Breeze last month and it was great to see all sorts of stuff like pencils he had tamed.

Practicing beads and coves generates so many hiding places.
