Quick update;

Went to leicester bearings and the bloke behind the counter is a time served gentleman, he took one look at the bearing and went "pre 1968 that is"

I thought oh dear, no longer available, as modern bearings in this size have a narrower dimension.

But.... He can get the same bearings that came out, still plenty of stocks from before 1968. He says the new bearings will be pre '68 as the company that made them was taken over in '68 and re branded as rhp.

I was staggered that there would be any left from that era!

But nowhere near as staggered when he said the two bearings will be £35 each plus VAT!!!!!!!!!!

F@£$sake! I said!

But - if these bearings had been replaced once before in this machines 70+ years - £70 odd quid isn't too bad.

Still not recieved my new urethane tyres from the US, got them on ebay from Ohio, Hope they arrive soon!

Liam.

1/2" looks to be quite wide for that bore.

My RHP catalogue shows 9/32. 11/32 7/16 and 5/8 widths.

Did you pay up or are you still looking? if so do you have a bearing code such as KLNJ5/8 for them?

Bob

Left them there, but not ordered yet........ Will be calling the other supplier I know and asking, but otherwise go with Leicester. More for the reason that they are the exact same ones that have come out.

Can get you a number monday if you are able to help?

Liam.

Hi Liam,

I can't help directly but I do think you have been quoted a silly price.

There are generally huge mark-ups in the bearing world

You could try calling arc euro http://www.arceurotrade.co.uk/ on Monday
Whilst they don't list your bearing on their site, the owner Ketan, is very helpful and might be able to help.

Google for "bearing boys" They too are pretty good.

Eriks have branches all over (used to be bearing services) and whilst not the cheapest might have a better offer.

If push comes to shove, you could fit a narrower bearing and a spacer or depending on the housing design, a pair of 9/32" stacked.
These should be about £6 each trade inc vat

Almost anything is better than 35 notes plus vat!!

Finally received my new bandsaw tires from the states, got some polyurethane tyres, specifically custom made for the walker turner saw, apparently unusual as they are 1&1/4" wide, by 1/8" thick.

They are a stretch fit, so should be fun!

Got the new bearings in, spins nice and smooth now.

Will be doing some work on the guides and sorting a fence out.

Does anyone recommend a crown on the wheels?

Bought a blade when I was at Axi today, had a mental block and bought a 96", but on reflection i think my saw is 96 1/2", typically not a stocked size.

May have to call Matt at workshop heaven.

Also, is it worth buying M42?

Many thanks guys, help much appreciated.

oh... if bob is looking, any details/recommendations on the bandsaw fence you have fitted to your metalworking startrite in the other threads?

Cheers

Liam.

Thanks Bob.

Does it lock nice and securely? And can it be adjusted square to the blade?

I'm guessing it does, else you'd have probably pushed it through the startrite!

Liam.

I have found mine to lock securely but someone else here has been having problems with grip although fixed it with a shim (see my Startrite BS thread on the second page.

The fence is not adjustable but again shims behind the mounting brackets can fix that too.

Decided to go with the Kreg system, I have one of their mitre gauges so i'm happy with their level of quality.

Will be putting some pics up on here of the WIP as I go through the process of fitting and tune up etc.

Fitted the top wheel with its new tire yesterday, bloomin' difficult it was too! Will show pics of how I did it.

Been looking at the axminster blade guide upgrade, anyone tried them?

Cheers

Liam.

This is a fascinating thread and thanks Steve for that link in past pages for the fence with the toggle clamp. I found a whole bunch of clamps at a bootfair last summer and was going to use them for jigs but the forward toggle did not have a use...UNTIL NOW!

Thanks mate!
