Hi

I don't see the benefit personally, the heated debates would still continue and possibly offend people, albeit in a different area.

What is needed is a way to drive people to use the search function before posting, thus reducing the amount of duplicate questions and the ensuing debates.

A sticky or series of stickies covering the usual topics would get my vote.

I agree with the search function but if your new to the forum and don't know how to search ect wouldn't a better place be in the sharpening chat room?
I seem to have rattled a few cages and that wasn't my intension.
When these debates drone on people get fed up and this is the solution surely?
Then again maby it's become habit to procrastinate with these topics either way I'll loose no sleep

I personally see no point in having a separate section for sharpening, it would still get inflated debates dragging on endlessly churning out the same dogmatic "my methods better than yours" input from a small group of people.

Persons wanting basic guidance or advice to get them cutting wood well enough to actually produce some wood work would still stand the risk of getting embroiled in the same rhetoric when someone attempts to give them a simple back to basics guide.

UKW could always have a sticky if someone would care to attempt the writing of a simple description of the various methods, for and against, relative costs etc.

Or of course someone keen enough can host a forum specific to sharpening tools and UKW can provide a link to it.

How about a sticky containing links to some of the more informative sharpening threads - trying to avoid ones that degenerate and border on abusive would be the challenge.

As chas said, why don't you create a sticky with all the different ways of sharpening.

Each group could choose a person to create a instructional video or essay :shock:

That way someone could look at all and decide which one suits their needs/budget/ability best.

There would be no more questions or arguments.


But if the need to debate was still there, you could discuss which one had the most views at the end of the year.... (hammer)

I'll share my method of sharpening if others do, I'm relatively new and I remember asking sharpening question and I was a bit over whelmed with opinions and the like,
So should we like the tool review by Andy T, share our ways, what we use ect so some one asking questions can check out diffrent peoples view and take what they want from it.

I would have gone for a separate forum myself. At least it might contain the "arguments" in one specific place. Using the search function isn't always the easiest or best way of finding information you'd like. Having balanced articles or postings of various methods and advice, which are easy to find, would be good too (if at all possible :twisted: ), so the sticky idea is good. Sharpening is an issue all woodworkers have an interest in, unlike many other topics.

It can be tricky for new forum members to search and find the best posts on any subject and the problem with looking at old or sticky posts is that they are that (old). We do practice and use different/new products some of which are improvements and some are just marketing hype. Lets hope we can keep the replies to newbies both positive and informative but our opinions are just that (our opinions) based on our own levels of experience and exposure or openness to try new and different techniques.
