There simply isn't a "best way" we all have our own preferences on how we sharpen our tools, so a separate sharpening forum or chat room fine go ahead I for one will not be looking at it nor will those I suspect that are experienced at sharpening.
So those that are asking for advice or the "best way to" will not get any, for those that need help there is always google then you takes your choice from that advice on offer.
There that's my twopenarth

Well, my tuppenyworth is this.....

A forum/group/club will only survive with members....old, long standing members move on (illness, change of circumstance etc etc) so every forum needs to attract, and keep, new members. Taking this forum as an example the new members may be very experience turners or total newbies (we were all newbies once)...now within those mix of newbies and experienced turners the new members will be split again into computer literate and non computer literate...so you may well end up with a total newbie who has very little idea with computers so will find it hard to use the search function....He wont stay around long and will find a different forum that suits his needs. I think a separate forum for sharpening....strongly moderated to stop any falling out.....would be a good idea and if it attracts 2 new members thats a growth of membership that may continue to grow as new members reccommend their friends etc etc etc......and finally, not wishing to upset whoever it was that wrote it, the comment "if you can't sharpen it you shouldn't be using it" is quite insulting to anyone starting out...we all had to learn somewhere and helpful forums like this are the way to learn from each other!! A simple analogy......I bought my first motorbike at 15....I had no idea how to ride it but through a network of friends I soon learnt!

Not a good idea, a sharpening forum would lead to either uncontrolled argument or a ghost town.

Would we also have a saw using forum? A which way to turn a screw forum? Maybe a how to drill forum.

Anyone new to using a computer isn't going to get very far on the internet without learning how to use Google. The same goes for this forum. I don't have any problem with commenting or advising on a question that asks, for example, whether router X is better than router Y for doing Z as that shows that the person has actually taken ownership of their question, done some research, is using their brain.

Anyone who just asks ' what is a good router' is just being lazy.

The mods have more than enough work to do without introducing another sub-forum that is guaranteed to become divisive.

If anyone feels strongly enough then start a thread where the first post has a list of useful stickies to sharpening threads. Again, the mods have enough to do and so we shouldn't expect them to have to do it.

The comment regarding 'if you can't sharpen it'...I think was meant slightly tongue in cheek. There is a serious point behind it that perhaps has been missed. Namely that if you are trying to use, say, a blunt chisel then you are in danger of having an accident.

I don't think it would be a good idea, just look at the comment's, suggestions and disagreement already when the subject is raised and how many tin foil hats are suddenly worn.

Hat, coat :)
Ye was a bad idea, I think it's more about not liking change, stuck in their ways ect,
The hopes and dreams about new members using the search bar is slim2none.
Like so many have said don't read if you don't want to, I never thought of that.

The sticky note is a good idea, would solve a few issues and the ability to comment so we have a solution as the least

Have a good day gents
TT

I agree some questions are simple to point of idiocy, but a problem I feel is that very little will be added to old threads/answers if the advice is just to go away and research something. How many of us consider we know more than enough about something only to read an answer or a comment that makes us think "oh why, oh why didn't I think to do that/ use that product/visit that dealer and so on? I think this information would often not be there if subjects/threads were not kept "alive". None of us are repositories of all known human knowledge.*

* ](*,) ](*,) No! No! No! Don't go there!
