Where I live in Italy I have no land line or mobile cover. I do have internet access however and wired the house for WIFI. I have been using Skype for years but now it's on its way out and I need to find an alternative. I use Whatsapp but Italy is still a bit backwards, when it comes to computing and many still don't even have, or want, a smartphone, so I need to call landlines. I have an elderly Iphone but also have a half reasonable android phone. I'm not interested in video, just voice. I did try an Italian service at one stage called Messagenet, with a virtual number, but the phone never rang, all I ever got was missed calls.
Any suggestions for a Skype replacement?

Zoom was the one that every used during covid, we still use it at work for some meetings as it has different features to Teams.

Voice call inside whatsapp perhaps surprisingly tends to give a fairly clear call when a normal mobile phone call is unusable due to breakup and lousy transmission.

Sadly, since Skype was bought out by Microsoft, it has been getting worse and worse- I still have it but never use it any more...

Due to my location (VERY rural Australia) I have no mobile coverage at all on my property and use Voip via satellite (in my case its using a local company called Australianphone lol) and it works far better than Skype ever did...

It appears as either a mobile or for a bit extra a 'home phone' line (costs an extra $2 a month, but means I get cheaper calls out and plus people calling me get it at the price of a 'landline' rather than the more expensive mobile rates...

Best of all their voip app replaces the normal 'phone dialler' app so the mobile works totally seamlessly with the voip instead of the normal dialler app...

I replaced the phones voice/data plan with a data only plan (cheaper than a voice/data plan to boot lol), so when I am in range of the cellphone network, it uses the phones data plan to make voip calls, at home it connects to the wifi network from the satellite router and uses that to make a phone call instead

Best of all, you can pick and choose from any voip company to do the 'dialling out' bit- they all work the same, and you can use any mobile (or multiple mobiles) for the calls, or the computer, or get a Voip 'box' which allows you to plug in your old house phone/s and connects to your internet connection as well... (I have used them quite successfully in the past with a fax machine lol- good for older people not comfortable with 'tech stuff')
Like these (these are from the mob I use- there is a HUGE range of similar ones on the market- they all work with any voip provider)...

Or you can buy dedicated voip phones... (again from my voip providers shop, any voip phone will work)

(its quite handy- I have the one 'phone number'- and that rings at home and at my mobile at the same time- so I can pick up at 'any phone' I am at...)

You can also add as many 'phone lines' as you want to the account ($2 Au a month for each 'line' in my case)- handy if you got kids that tie up the houseline for hours- just give them their own 'second line'- or if you run a business from home... (thats very handy btw for me I got a separate 'business' line, and it works either from the 'desk phone' in the shed or my mobile- one number rings all phones)

I got Whatsapp as well, but not impressed- during busy times the audio drops significantly in quality (get 'choppy'), and it doesn't always 'ring'- just comes up with a 'missed call'- sometimes minutes later...(although rare, I have seen it do that literally hours later- I was talking to a friend on voip and he had mentioned he had tried to call me on Whatsapp- it didn't show a 'missed call' until that afternoon... and we were talking before eight in the morning!!!)- my voip works well on any internet connection (it even works on 33kb dialup lol)

Just find a Voip provider that supplies you with 'local' phone numbers and use it- no screwing around with other apps...

I am also looking for a Skype replacement in order to make international calls to foreign landline and mobile phones. This has become more urgent since Skype have already turned off calls to land/mob phones without warning, leaving us with credit and no apparent means of getting it back.
I hate Microsoft!
When I have an idea of the alternatives, I'll post them here

Strange- its still working here (just tried it and called my voip line)- I don't use it any more as it costs more than making calls on the voip phone anyway- still got $9 in credit on it though lol plus it only works on the computer (my phones too old to use skype they say) - 'you need to update your skpe' go to the playstore 'sorry your phone does not support this version of skype' sighs... and the laptops audio sux on skype using its inbuilt mic... plus the laptop isn't exactly 'pocket friendly' LOL

Skype still working for me.

No matter how old I get I have to keep learning! The company that installed our fibre network was recently bought out by a London outfit Community Fibre. They recently swapped over to the Commuinity Fibre software from the origimal provider's. This caused problems with our VoiP phone, phone did not ring and went over to voicemail, which sent a message to email account.(the only way we were aware of a missed call).
The engineer installed an additional box to the router, exactly like the one in Dabop's first photo, think I now no what that device is, thanks to Dabop!

I use the whatsap voice calling over wifi on my phone quite often when getting poor mobile signal.
Not been impressed with its performance- it often goes straight to missed call without ringing and doesnt notify you for minutes (and sometimes hours) that you had a missed call...
When it works, performance is OK, and calling out is OK, but getting calls- not so good...

It works pretty well here. Doesn't always ring on the phone, which I guess is what you are saying, but I have it installed on my laptop and that rings.

As whatever I use is my ONLY form of phone communications (live in the middle of the bush lol) it has to be reliable- my voip has been 100% so far, skype 'used' to be good (but since the microsoft buyout has become pretty much like all their other stuff- riddled with bugs and requires constant updates both softwarewise and with the hardware) and Whatsapp is ok going out- but not reliable on incoming calls (useless for a business...)

No landline here (mega $$$ to get installed) and no phone network since they shut down the 3G towers (4g has only half the range, so I don't expect to ever have mobile coverage again in my lifespan here and even the 3G only worked in 'certain spots') so sat internet is the only 'phone' coms I have... (I have a Unifi wifi network on the property that gives me good wifi coverage over almost all the property (40 acres) from three of the 'flying saucers'... only right down the back fence does coverage get spotty...

My mobile is good in town, but HAS to work off the internet via satellite at home, looked at wifi calling, but voip worked out cheaper than the only mobile phone company that provides wifi calling here (by a considerable margin!!!- like literally less than a third of the price!!!!) plus wifi calling is restricted in both providers and compatible handsets (which my existing phone is NOT on the list...)

I'm right in the middle of this...

The arrow is where I am currently sitting (waves- can you see me lol) thats taken from my front fenceline...

I'm pretty remote too, but not by Aus standards. 3km to rhe nearest public road. I did try an Italian VOIP provider, not free, with virtual phone number, it didn't work. Similar experience to yours with Whatsapp. All 3 of us had their app on our mobiles. The only one that never rang was mine, at home.

LOL- my driveways basically a third of that distance alone!!! (550m in total to the front gate) then dirt road for the next 3km, then a 'single lane' road 10km to town...
As in a single lane of tar only- you meet oncoming traffic, you both drop the passengers tyres off into the dirt to pass (at 100kmh!!!)
This is the main road into 'town'- all 1500 people...
1741418720462.jpeg

My trailers basically as wide as the tar lol (thats the main road from my town to the next one... an hours drive away...

You get about 5-6km out of town, and thats it- no phone coverage for the next hour basically (their maps says there is, but its so patchy and rare it may as well be useless- a 10m stretch of coverage every 10-15km is NOT 'phone coverage' by my books lol)

I've used voip with a couple of different companies here in Australia- Engine up north for over 5 years and Australian Phone down here, never had an issue with it in years of usage... (I used Skype for my long distance stuff and the mobile on 3G before they shut the towers down in Australia- 4G is nowhere near as good in coverage as 3G was...) hence going back to voip... no choice unless I want to drive a few km before I can get a signal....
