Hi

You can get a PVCu solvent cleaner for less than a fiver. (Go to the little plastics shop on the road up from the "elephant pub " ? in Ashington, JTF on Tyne Tunnel trad est and I've seen it in Yorkshire trading in Cramlingon as well. give me a ring or drop in and I'll give you some if you wish - and a coffee  ) You can also get small gap filler in a tube and they might be able to advise on repair.

It's highly unlikely that annoying as it is, the PVCu would have started a fire as if my memory serves it's a class 1 self extinguishing material (might be wrong of course) It would have melted / burned a hole in it though.

I'm sure the missus has learned her lesson.

Cheers
Bob

PS
Morrisons Glass ( ASDA roundabout) is worth a call in if you can't find it.

Thanks Bob, I think the place on Milburn Road is K Plastics, I'll give them a try first, if they can't help I'll try Morrisons.

SWMBO rang the insurance company as she really doesn't want it repaired, but apparently we're not covered! We were not aware we have no accidental cover? I know nothing about insurance but I would have thought all household policies would pay out for accidents.

so if she rang and said "I was deliberately trying to set fire to the house but was unsuccessful....." you'd be covered... because it wasn't an accident..??

It's being looked into by the broker apparently, my hearings shot so I dont use phones, SWMBO has to arrange all that sort of stuff, when it's sorted I will let you all know outcome, I must admit it took me by surprise!

I find it hard to believe. Contents can have an option to include accidental damage or not but this is buildings insurance and even if it could be insured without that cover it's fire damage which would always be covered. I think it's a load of cobblers and she needs to push it.

I agree Bob, they are trying to wriggle there way out of paying a genuine claim, we will have to put this on hold because on Monday we're off to Turkey for a weeks sunshine.

Have a great holiday.
We're off again on our travels soon as well and arranged daughter to house sit 'cos we're going back to OZ for 5 weeks. My wife thought it was going to be restful - it certainly isn't

Going via Kuala Lumpur for a few nights, on to Melbourne then do the ocean drive bit before driving up the coast to Sydney to see the folks and spend a few days in the city, on to Perth and up the coast before coming back for a few nights in Dubai. we'll be driving around 2500 miles apart from all the city stays - phew! :D

I'm a bit late to the discussion but should mention that it's not just mirrors that can cause problems. Some years ago I was given a commemorative paper weight. I used it in my office and, when I went on holiday one summer, left it on top of a heap of papers to stop them blowing about if someone opened the door. The papers were on a cupboard near a south facing window. When I came back and lifted the paper weight, there was a beautifully inscribed burn mark in an arc across the top piece of paper. I can only assume that the reason that the paper didn't catch fire was that the paperweight stopped air getting to it.

The 'Walkie Talkie' building in London has been burning cars parked where the 'parabolic curve' of the building has been concentrating the rays of the sun.
Fires have also been started in peoples house where round glass paperweights have been left on window sills or where the rays of the sun can hit it.

UPDATE

We had a letter from the insurance company saying that they had listened to the tape and we had declined the accidental policy extension which is available at extra cost, may I point out that we have not been supplied with a copy of this tape. It went on to say 'Please treat this letter as [insurance companies name] final decision'.

SWMBO rang them again this morning, the conversation went something like this,

Wife - Our policy actually says windows are included in our cover
Insuarnce company - it means the glass
Wife - if it meant the glass why doesn't it say the glass in the windows is covered
Insurance company - I'm not sure
Wife - if you say our claim is an accident then someone must be to blame
Insurance company - I don't follow what you mean
Wife - the Police no longer refer to a car crash as a 'road traffic accident' they now call it a 'road traffic collision' because to say it's an accident means someone can be blamed
Insurance company - do you know what your perfectly right, I cant understand why your original claim has been refused, can you download a claim form and send us two photos of the damage together with two quotes please.

The above transcript is not exactly word for word, but what really pineapples me off is, our insurance company have tried it on, they don't want to payout, unfortunately for them I don't give in easily, I also don't think this is the end of the claim, I suspect someone further up the ladder will try to knock our claim back, if that turns out to be the case we will be contacting the insurance ombudsman.
