Hello forum,

Have bought a veritas plug cutter. Its round shank won't grip properly in the chuck of my drill, the black coating has been ground off in the chuck and now no matter how much I tighten the chuck it becomes loose. Any ideas ? should I have some kind of adapter to place the plug cutter in ? Advice much appreciated , cheers , paul

Get a better drill/chuck, have no problem with mine :D

With the spinning it is likely that the shank has become tapered, thats why you can't grip it any more. I would suggest filing three flats on the shank at 120 degree spacing to give the chuck jaws something to grip.

Does your drill have a keyless chuck? I've had trouble with keyless chucks not gripping well enough and don't use them any more.

Cheers

I've been using these for years but only in a drill press that doesn't use the keyless chuck and have had no problems. Might be that your chuck needs looking at.

Keyless chucks come in various qualities. I invested in a rather expensive Borland one a couple of years ago and it has been great. Only needs slight hand pressure to grip anything including circle cutters and the like. It saves me a lot of time at the drill press and also saves the frustration of losing the chuck key

The Axminster brand keyless chuck seems to work very well and is reasonably priced. I've never encountered a problem with it lacking grip (even using a 75mm adjustable boring bit). Metabo keyless chucks are also extremely good.

Not the one on my Metabo, great fun when you're up a platform and your drill bit drops out
