Hi Alf

I have a question about the stanley No53's as the one on that site you put the
up for, the top screw is a thumb screw but the one I have just has a screw ( like in the pic of the one on ebay ).

Do you know if it should have a thumb screw or is the screw what they where made with too.

Good question, Colin, and not one I know the answer to. I would assume a thumb screw of some sort would be correct, but you never know with Stanley. Any lucky blighter out there with Walter's Bible who can tell us...?

Cheers, Alf

Yet again cursing her foolishness in believing the "there's another edition of Walters out soon" rumour all those years ago. ](*,)

I have seen Stanley adjustable throat spokeshaves (53 & 54) with a variety of screws/thumbscrews for adjusting the throat. I'm not sure though, whether a slotted screw is original equipment. Here are some examples of different thumbscrews that I've just found by doing a quick search of the web.

53ss_Earliest.jpg

No. 53 - Bob Kaune's website. Bob reckons this style is one of the earliest types of 53.

53ss_c1905.jpg

No. 53 - Bob Kaune's website. Bob reckons this one is from around 1905.

54ss.jpg

No. 54 - Bob Kaune's website.

no_54_shave.jpg

No. 54 - Jon Zimmers' website. Jon dates this one to around 1910 based on the trademark on the blade.

My guess is it is like the planes that have bits from different types like the #7 I have just got.

What was there at the time was used.

I've always shied away from the #53 (in its various incarnations).

It appears that the big, convenient screw adjust mouths size, and the blade is only held by the slotted screw in the middle?

This would seem to make adjustment "interesting", and blade holding a little weak.

I use the #53 quite frequently and have not experienced any difficulty adjusting the mouth or with blade chatter. Yes, the blade is held with a single screw, but (with mine at any rate) the blade is bedded securely. Overall, this is an excellent spokeshave.

Saw one of those shaves in PFT at the weekend

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the heads up on the #53. I popped in to Penny Farthing Tools today. Took the park & ride bus from near the airfield - very quick and good value at £2

Bought the #53. Very nice 8) Sweet heart mark on the blade. They have another if you are tempted.

Also bought a very nice Tyzack dovetail saw and a (never used) Stanley #71 router plane.

Passed on the T5. It was nice but I got the above three tools for less than the plane. Might go back for it when I've saved up a bit and if they still have it :-k

Thought it was a cracking shop with some very nice tools - I can see myself going back there frequently

Thanks again,

Paul

Paul - glad to have helped. Was in there again this pm briefly so must have missed you, saw the No53 you mentioned (£9.50 - seemed a snip) but then SWIMBO has put a severe limitation on my transactional activities. The T5 was, I feel, at £60, a trifle too much to pay and the guy wasn't prepared to move on the price which was a shame. All said, it is a cracking establishment but you do need to go in there frequently  as allot of the time he doesn't have what your looking for, but the next time the slope beckons and you feel yourself reaching for the wallet......which is exactly what happened when I bought the Norris A1 and my Calvert Stevens smoother - Rob

Just a quick update on the Stanley #53 I bought a couple of days ago. I sharpened and polished the blade and tried it out - and I'm very impressed :D

Looking at the #53 one could be forgiven for thinking, as BugBear suggested, that the blade adjustment could be problematic and the holding strength of the single screw a little weak. However, what I found was that the single screw in fact held the blade quite firmly, without any chatter, no doubt helped by a well-machined bed (much better than my Record 151s). The mouth adjustment is interesting because as you close up the mouth, it moves in a slight arc, thereby reducing the depth of cut very slightly. This makes blade adjustment very easy and convenient because you can go from a coarse cut/wide mouth to a fine cut/narrow mouth with a quick turn of a hand screw - very neat 8)

I think I'm going to like this spokeshave :D

Cheers

PFT, just the place for maximum frustration, (sorry a bit off topic ) last time in there looking for a set of outside jaws for my 3 jaw TOS chuck on the engineering lathe.

Much help and searching, rummaging etc. came up with countless sets, odds and ends, And just ONE brand new unused jaw to suit said chuck, I repeat Just ONE ](*,) :!: :!:

The only comment I got in sympathy was 'just think how much more frustrating it would have been if you had found two'

LOML asked if the forum might club together to buy Alf a couple of the Coopering Stave Planes they had lying around for Xmas, but I reminded her that Alf was not a collector  :)

You still looking Chas? I have an unused 3-jaw TOS lying around somewhere. Can have a look and see what jaws are there if you still have the need.

Cheers
