Can you apply a water based varnish over a spirit based stain ?

Once the stain has dried and all the volatiles have gone I see no reason not to.
I've use Acrylic (water based) finishes over spirit stained wood and apart from a little pick up of loose pigment (which would have happened with spirit based finish anyway) nothing untoward has happened.

Richard, Chestnut Finishes water based stuff is fine over the top of their cellulose based stains.

Thanks for that info Chas, Chestnut stains are my favourite so it's good to keep the make of varnish the same.
