Sharing this as it suits my work of using bench vise an awful lot so makes adjusting much quicker but safely so

Behaves like a damper

Love to hear anyone's moments of discovery

HNY and all that

I have seen O rings, rubber bands, a wooden collar used to the same effect. No matter how manly others may be, I swore like a pig when that used to happen to me!

I'd forgotten how painful that can be and as I don't have a bench vice yet, I'm at no risk of it happening anytime soon. I do foresee one of those "dammit" moments in the future where I recall this insightful thread whilst nursing some pinched skin!

Nothing like trapping the skin web between thumb and index finger for pain.
As an apprentice I remember the pain when I trapped mine between the square corner of a 4" knocking ring spanner and the 4lb lump Hammer I was using to free the nut.
The words oh ruddy rollocks could be heared clear across the factory, which was about 3/4 mile long, as I was whisked across to the nurse.
Wince now thinking about it and that was 44 years ago....

My biggest hand pain like that it hitting the knuckles in the hand
Used to have to hack off old plaster of walls so we could re plaster. Oh year this in the days before cordless hammer drills and the corded mains version were not mush smaller that the ones they used to dig up roads
So it was lump hammer and chisel/bolster, scarf hammer. Blood(lots) sweat, tears...
Ok some days were bliss the plaster was soft and just fell away
Other times it was hard as iron and would not budge and you would spend all day just trying to remove old plaster/sand and cement
