Hello, I am a woodworking beginner. Recently put together an oak framed garage from a kit. Bought and fitted a used oak garage door from Ebay and I now need to build another identical door. Copying the door I already have, I have made a cutting list and been looking at a couple of online places for prices for the oak. One place, Timbersource, will cut to exact length, width and depth, but price is coming out well over £1,000 as they only sell prime grade. Another place sells lighter grade but you cannot specify the depth. Prices seem more reasonable. Just looking for any advice on how best to source the European oak cut to size. I don’t think it needs to be prime grade. Also, if I can’t get the exact depth, how easy is it to reduce the depth yourself? Would it be worth investing in a planing machine of some sort? Any thoughts or advice greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

It would be worthwhile visiting local suppliers, eg WL.West at Petworth or Surrey Timbers at Guildford.
If you're thinking of getting seriously into woodwork it would be worthwhile investing in a planer/thicknesser and buy rough sawn timber. A budget of £400 should get you a reasonable starter grade s/h PT.

Many thanks, Brian. I’ll check out those suppliers (and any more I can find locally). Very helpful.
