URGENT THICKNESSER ADVICE

Hi,

can anyone help.

I was thinking of buying one on the small combi planer thicknessers ie the small Fox one or the Woodstar PT85 however Ive just came back from my local B&Q where they have their Macallister 1500 watt thicknesser on sale for £99.00 and with the 15% offer they have on this weekend would work out £75.00 for it.

Does anyone have one and is it worth the money?, or would it be best to go for a combi one or buy this one and buy a separate planer.

Thing is theres only about half a dozen and don't want to miss the boat if it's a decent buy.

Any advice would be helpful in making up my mind.

This is just my honest opinion but you get what you pay for. I used to have a cheapo thicknesser and got rid of it in the end and bought floor standing seperate units. It will work but may need fettling to make it useable. These cheap ones usually suffer badly from snipe but making a longer bed for them usually helps with this. HTH. :wink:

Thing is theres only about half a dozen and don't want to miss the boat if it's a decent buy.

I'd let this particular boat sail - I'd even wave it off with a smile!

Doorstop fodder, IMO - you'll end up frustrated and annoyed, even after much fettling.

I 've got to differ,if its better for your budget go for it!
I had a nutool thicknesser for £165-00 and it worked fine.
Only problem NOISE, so i now have a 10" combi.

hi, i have a macallister thicknesser, but it is not the model currently on sale in b&q. Mine is a slightly older model. For what i have used it for it has been fantastic with no setting up. It worked straight out of the box. I tend to leave about 3" either end of the piece i am working on because there is some sniping but not has bad has some machines i have used in the past. The newer model in b&q looks better but i have no experience of that particular machine. I would say that for the price so long has you leave abit extra to the piece you are working on it will do you fine.

I also have the older model Mac Allister and it is fantastic mine also worked straight out of the box no complaints about the machine.

My only complaint is that trying to get spare parts from B&Q is like banging your head against a brick wall? I have not yet found an alternative supplier of spare parts.

I've never used it but for £75 is has to be worth taking a chance. If it's good then you're happy, if not, just take it back.

B&Q have many faults but they are good at refunds

Pedant head on here, you would pay £85 for the machine, if you wanted to waste your money :lol: Joking aside, I would save your money and spend a little bit more, or wait for Axminster to have a sale. I've found that you only get what you pay for.

Hi, it does have a dust extraction port. 2" i think. Never tried to connect a hoover or anything to mine, i just let the saw dust blow out. With a good hoover like the earlex from machine mart it should be fine although will fill up very quickly.

Hi, forgot to mention macallister tools are made by gmc, i think. There is a link somewhere on this forum to it. Try them for spare parts.
