A quick question-with the iron in the plane did you get (with use of the lateral adjuster) a straight, full width projection of the blade?
Cheers

Labuzz,

I hope you enjoy the books and dvds.

One thing that becomes clearer is that it is very difficult to communicate by writing alone. It is so much easier to demonstrate face to face.

You are talking about the 50 degrees iron ( its the only one which is straight but skewed a little bit ). With or without the use of the lateral adjuster I think it's almost impossible to get a "strictly" perpendicular ( to the length of the plane) cutting edge and maintain that position while using the plane . I always end up with an uneven projection of the blade, the small hard timber test demonstrate that clearly. I often find myself trying to compensate for that by moving the plane laterally on the board. That's why I start to think that a curved blade ( who can be a little bit off too! ) is more easy to control and more reliable...you have the "2 sides" ( a mirror type of configuration ) of the cutting edge not just one ( see the dvd n2 from David C)

One thing though, I am building an electric guitar and I really need and want to be precise, and understand too!...Maybe this amount of precision is not really needed for other types of work....Anyway this time spent on this kind of tecnicalities is very valuable imo. I feel more free day after day.

Your books and dvds are great I love them! True that the dvds help a lot when you start....We need to see those things.
And yes when you are alone...Its often more difficult...In your case its about communication , and in my case its more about choices and the evaluation of my own work.

Sorry for the hijack of the thread...we are a little bit of topic now...

Cheers.

after getting the differnt points of view from you wonderful people, I decided in the end on one of these:

It arrived today via Florida, where my boss and his wife were on leave. I bought the 38deg and 50 deg blades to go with it and so should be able to cope with most eventualities. Didn't really get a chance to use it much this evening as I had to take the LOML to the airport as she is off to visit her elderly parents for a couple of weeks. Hopefully the kids will let me have a play at the weekend.

FWIW, if anyone is contemplating ordering stuff from LV overseas, it ended up a quite a lot cheaper to get it in the US than in Canada - by the time sales tax etc. had been added. The exception seems to be if the goods are shipped to New York where sales tax has to be added. It goes without saying that it would have been quite a lot more buying in the UK.

Thanks again,
