As you say, some you win and some you lose, but the urge to take that leap of faith is so strong... Grin!

Odd. Sure I posted a reply to this previously , so apologies for the delay. No marks but I think they are Marples. I always assumed that brass pattern was a Marples design but that's just a vague notion. I'm no tool collector. AndyT posted a picture from an old catalogue when I first got the second gauge which showed it to be the best one they sold (at that time). I had a long look for the original thread of when I got that little haul but I can't find it. Sorry I can't help more.
