Type of Wood (identification) Any Idea?

Any idea of what species of wood this is?.

From the look of the stained surfaces I'd guess oak.
Is there any reason to think it's something more exotic ?

Looks like quarter sawn oak - sometimes called tiger oak due to the medullary rays

I'd sand it back to its natural color and use a clear finish

oak, stained a dark brown colour, it was common at the turn of the 20th century, basically to emulate the far superior ammonia fumed oak.

I suspect it's not a true oak at all, but something closely related to, or actually is Australian silky oak, aka cardwellia sublimis. Another possibility might be grevillia robusta aka southern silky oak. Whatever, I suspect one of those Australian species. Slainte.

My first thought was Lacewood. From the first pic anyway.

It has rays, but the rest of it is very un-oaklike

I'd go with a species of oak. L.P. has very vivid flecks, but doen't really have the long medullary rays that the oaks do.
