Agreed...on those projects I often decline to comment - Rob

I think over time the term DIY has acquired the inference of badly done work and is therefore generally taken as a negative. Shame really, given that it originates (as we all know) from the revolution of doing things yourself rather than relying on tradesmen to do everything, which is an entirely laudible intent and one many of us subscribe to.

As others have said, there is good and bad work done by both professionals and hobbyists - the distinction needs to be wether the work is good, not how the individual earns their living. As Doctor says, our own projects forum is a window into this very fact.

I took the undertone of the original post to be 'lets show how many tradesmen we have on the forum to prove our credibility' - if that was the intent then its a flawed notion in my view.

As it happens, I think this is a bit if inter-forum sniping not worth worrying about too much. :)

Cheers, Ed

Strange how many people have voted as diy'ers!
Even though it doesn't really fit the bill.
Doctor i haven't really seen any rubbish (maybe not seen it all) just different skill/experience levels. :)

Hi

DIY all that means is that you think you have the ability to do it your self, it in no way means your a tradesman , Those days are long gone mores the pity , Very few of use left now i served a five yr apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner with a small building firm here in the south of england & i'm still learning now, my whole working life has been one big learning curve.

I was taught to make all aspect in wood of the required house in the shop first and then go out and fit to the houses we were building this would include windows , stairs, roof , first & second fixings and manufacture the kitchen unit as well, along with being taught other trades as well at the same time .

Remember there are good and bad tradsmen , as there equally as many good DIY people as there are bad ones .

Now I'm retired i have my own home shop as well as can be seen on my (www) . I only every work for my self at home , I hate  the words DIY wo be tide any one calling me one  , now a days in stead of using it I prefer the term of woodworkers , much better.

So where should i be placed on this list then .

trained tradesman retired
home woodworker

hmm ??
:D . hc

ps as for the comments on screfix , well what can you say however missguided they are take no notice, live and let live.

Isn't the reason that the term "DIY" has negative conotations due to a perception of badly-fitted DIY shelves, the use of "dumbed-down" techniques, and poor products heavily marketed to make tasks "easier" for folk with no experience or aptitude?

I'd prefer to use the terms amateur or professional woodworker - the distinction being that the professional woodworker makes the whole of his/her living from woodworking - and neither term necessarily implies anything about the quality of the resultant work, although it is likely that a professional would work faster than an amateur, time being money and all that!

In terms of the project photos I've seen on this forum, I'd say we have members whose skills and knowledge range from complete beginner to master craftsman, covering everything in between. What's so good about this forum is the sharing of knowledge, techniques and skills between people whatever their level.

I was scrolling thru the bodgit & scarper ltd screwfix forum the other day, and I noticed some-one called us lot here on UKworkshop.co.uk the "DIY Brigade" :|
Sounds like sour grapes to me, hobbyist is a better description :D

The irony of the 'DIY' slur is that I am sure many of us on this forum, myself included, got into this activity because they weren't satisfied with the standard of work produced by 'tradesmen'. My dad was the same. I have many memories of him on his knees fixing some botch up left by the 'professional'. Eventually the penny drops and you knuckle down and learn how to do it yourself only properly. It's all about standards. The skills and quality will follow if the motivation is there.

John
