A little while ago I managed to pick up an old tormek 2000 very cheaply. I need to get a few of the accessories but even buying these I've still got a bargain. My question refers to the honing wheel. The leather wheel was in a box and appears unused. Instead there is another wheel on in its place. I'm not sure what it is. It's light grey in colour, maybe hard rubber, doesn't feel particularly smooth. And it seems to have another smaller black rubber wheel inside it. What is it and what's it for?

I think that is rubber with abrasive in it. Sold a long time ago, preceeding the leather wheel. Make sure it is running away from the edge.

Best wishes,
David Charlesworth

Thank you David

I shall probably take it off and replace it with the new leather wheel that came with it in that case

No the leather wheel doesn't. I haven't looked that closely at the machine at all and didn't realise that was part of the drive mechanism. I bought it on a whim as it was so cheap a while ago and only now decided I ought to start using it. So I take it the black wheel needs to go on the leather wheel if they come off together. I'll get the old wheel off tomorrow and see what's what

Thanks

If it's like my Dakota (which is a pretty close clone of the Tormek), the outer wheel (grey or leather) and the inner wheel (black rubber) are separate: the outer wheel locks to the inner drive wheel with small pegs. Undo the big knob in the middle and you can easily separate one from t'other.

I made a clip for mine, for when it's not being used: it catches the drive shaft and pulls it away from the rubber wheel. That stops the rubber getting dents in it and it runs more smoothly as a result.

I am part of the Tormek team at BriMarc, therefore I am commercially involved with this post.

Most of my reply is covered above but for clarity I can confirm the below.

The grey wheel is a rubber compound that hones very slowly. No compound needed.

It was replaced by the leather wheel which gives much quicker results. Use the honing compound.

The black wheel is the drive wheel as has been said.

The machine you have can accept all of the latest Tormek jigs and accessories.

Thanks to all for the general advice and to David and Martin for confirming the original Q ref the grey wheel.

I have this morning took the grey wheel off and replaced it with the unused leather wheel that luckily came with it. I did notice the grey wheel had 3 prongs that engage with the drive wheel hub that help centre it. The leather wheel does not have these so sat off centre initially. Tightening it up centred it, I think the hubs centre themselves as you tighten. So it is now running satisfactorily. Only thing I noticed was I undid it all again but the leather wheel now doesn't want to come off. I didn't want to force it. So for future ref is it normal to need a bit of force to get it off?
