I have 4 days in cornwall next week. I'm hoping to get time off for good behaviour from babysitting and find a woodworking shop to visit. Any suggestions?

Hand tools or more machinery Bob?

Cornwall isn't small is it? Might be helpful to know the kind of distance you'd be willing to drive.

I'll be at hengar manor near Newquay.
I saw one advertised at st Austell but don't know if its worth the trip. I wont be driving so need to convince the wife that its worth us taking 2 small(ish) kiddies that way for a few hours.

West Country Woodworking is the best retailer I know in that part of the world - as you have already alluded to.
Good guys who know their stuff - decent sized showroom now with most major bands on display if you just want a browse.
Cheers

actually, west country woodworking isn't the one I found, so I shall have to look that one up.

Memzey… now I have my table saw I don't have much on my wants list. I just need a distraction from children and sea sides (hammer) (hammer) (hammer)
Went to yandles last week, their wood selection has grown bigger and is better displayed, but their tools section seems quite empty by comparison to my last visit, although the staff seem to be as vague as ever.

EDIT; HAH, just looked that store up and it was the one I found, but with a slightly different web name

If that's the bloke I think you mean, he was recently pointed out to me as someone who specialises in new and used Japanese tools.

See here - Rob

it's only 20 miles away, but I visit St Austell about once every twenty years if I have to.

Be getting your very own parking spot at this rate :D

West Country Woodworking is worth a visit as others suggest, but there is nothing much anywhere near it, its not in St Austell, its in Foxhole

If I have the right Hengar Manor, I wouldn't say its near Newquay though

Just got back and read the posts. I dint use the internet down there as I am bit cautious with my particulars in commercial places.
Didn't get to go to any wood shops unfortunately, The kiddies were booked into activities every single day. We never even went into Newquay, just bodmin for foodstuff.

Have to say Hengar is a cut above most places. I'm fussy where I sleep but that 3 bed chalet was a lot nicer than many houses that I have visited. Most of all it had storage heaters in every room and I haven't been that hot since I left Cyprus.
I can recommend the place to anyone with kids below 14, but there are even fishing lakes for the older children. I would rate it least 4 star.

Going back to yandles tomorrow, trying to get stuff that I was told would be there for me on the 12th. I phoned on the 14th, and was told they didn't know but would call me back. still waiting.
The customer service there doesn't rate many stars, if any.

If its not there I will cancel and try to pick it up at axminster Basingstoke on the way back to the airport on thursday.

Trego Mills.

I bought some cheap, cast iron 12" G cramps there. £2.50 each. I got a dozen. Didn't expect too much of them, but I used them well, and still have them. They are still serviceable. Made in China I think. I also got a nice Diston handsaw in Redruth. £30.00. Some time ago now though.

Not much help I suppose, but at least they have such things in Cornwall; wish I lived there, toolshops or not. There's always online shopping! Even in Kernow they have electricity...
