Rubbish, there never was a utopian age, change we have had yes, but by far for the better. Just take medicine, curing things easily that would have killed us just afew years ago, the advancement in science, more people go to university then ever in history, all in all Id rather live now than in 1928 or 38 or 48 etc. just aload of grumpy old men moans about how wonderful it was in our day !! LOL !!

Much better now with all the obesity and children who don't know how to play without batteries in it.

I loved the one with the 4 sat at a table. No chat, just staring into little moron screens. As for the turning of the wifi as a punishment? The little rat would probably just go and turn it back on as soon as dad was out of sight, change the password too so that dad couldn't turn it off again.

OK, the modern things are great, when they are used properly and most of todays children don't use them that way. There was a report on the 'haunted fish tank' (TV to some?) and they spoke to a girl, about 7 or 8 years old, and asked if she thought she spent too much time on her mobile? Her reply was no because she only spent about 4 or 5 hours each day and that wasn't too much ??? Each day!

While introducing new medicine-resistant strains of other things, and creating a lot of side-effects that leave patients wondering if they're better off before...

And study useless tat that does absolutely nothing for their careers or society in general.
Seriously, when was the last time you felt your situation would be so much better if only you could speak fluent Klingon?
What was the last job you saw where the Requirements included "Masters Degree in the films of Quentin Tarantino"?

Yes, the modern world is wonderful... but the people aren't worth piddling on even if they're afire!

how many of you that are complaining are over 60?

if it was the 40's we wouldn't be able to here you, you'd be under the ground.

so yes, it was better back then. :)

that generation that studies rubbish degrees is still doing alright with moving technology and science forwards, so it isn't all bad I guess.

it's a tired and over used old trope used by bored and unimaginative comedians in an vain attempt to sound up to date and trendy and it's something that has never changed in all those years.

Yep. I think there is a confusion here between education and training. The point of university courses is to develop critical thinking, not primarily to develop competence in a particular subject. Of course we need scientists and engineers, and probably do need more at the moment, but not infinitely more. We do, however, need large numbers of people (preferably 100%) who can actually think, who can evaluate the mix of truth, persuasion, prejudice and lies with which we are daily bombarded in traditional and social media, come to sensible decisions and elect able and responsible politicians. Film studies, arcane languages, history, etc. are perfectly good ways of doing this, many of them better than, say, physics for this purpose.

And how many 70+ year-olds have to ask their grandkid how to operate some aspect of their phone ?

But that generation also tend not to get a job that has anything to do with what they studied... and in many cases have to waste more time retraining for the job they do have!

That doesn't mean it's a good thing... and the more people we have with degrees, the lower the value of those degrees, the lower the wages they'll get, the pickier employers can be and so on...

And this is why we have all these shiny new kids coming in and throwing all these new, innovative ideas around about how they will revolutionise our ways of working with their critical thinking... because they don't actually understand the subjects they're being critical about and have limited experience of even the paradigms they're trying to apply.

Maybe in the old days critical thinking was all you needed, but in the modern world all that happens is these critical thinkers juggle ledger numbers and move money around between offshore accounts, occasionally make some redundancies and then asset-strip the company just before it all goes pear-shaped.

A lot of those people will end up in roles that specifically generate those persuasions, prejudices and lies in the first place.
Besides, you don't need university to learn critical thinking. Plenty of us managed just as well without... and sometimes even better, as we're not solely reliant on what was taught at Uni.

How many of these hyper-intelligent university graduates so proficient with modern technology and critical thinking lack the common sense that allows the rest of us to navigate the workplace safely and unsupervised?
How many of them need a company-enforced H&S policy, complete with toolbox talks, because they don't know to look where they're going or tie their shoelaces...?

that'll be the generation that has to work to the rules put forward by the generation before that were created because that generation killed hundred because of a risk ignorant attitude towards safety, you know the one were fingers got cut off by guillotines because they didn't see the point in guards, or the one that blew up a gas platform because communication between shifts didn't matter, or the one that didn't need to worry about harmful dust, it'll be fine.

yes this generation has it's issues, it has a a load of useless chaf that can't be bothered to work and who can't rub two sticks together and get fire, but so has every other generation, yours included (bleedin hippys, cut ya hair and get a job) and the best bit of all of this, the people who created this are the generation before that are now complaining about it, and they were created by the generation before that (who also complained).

I have avoided all of these generational issues by never growing up. 8)

No, that generation never had iPhones to stare at while walking along down the middle of a live train track, ignoring the shouts of the site safety controller... and generally if someone was that stupid, Natural Selection took care of things. These days it's all H&S crazy because the new generation will simply sue you, if you didn't *specifically* instruct them not to do something (and all possible variants of it) that anyone with an ounce of common sense (and everyone who's done a full university course in Critical Thinking) would instinctively know.
Back in the old days people got hurt because they either accepted risks and still took them, or because they were mucking about.

Again Natural Selection took care of things - Back then, if you didn't work you didn't get paid. These days you just get cuddles and cupcakes and benefits payments to cover everything.
Dead weight was never carried and it was never some kind of trophy to be proud of!

Not a bad guess, but also not close enough... A few years off.

Those who created it may be of the same generation, but they're not complaining. They're enjoying the fruits of their critical thinking, claiming everything on expenses and retiring on the interest from their offshore accounts.

So why are all you old fuddy duddies typeing away on here and not out in the fresh air fiddling around with a couple of sticks lighting a fire.

Because it's cold outside and we already lit a fire in here...
